AUS Men's Hockey Playoffs: UNB sweeps Moncton, captures AUS title for sixth straight season

(Moncton, N.B.) - The UNB Reds men's hockey team captured their sixth consecutive Atlantic University Sport title Tuesday night.

Brady Gilmour (Grafton, Ont.) scored the only goal necessary, as his Reds defeated the host Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-0 in Game 2 of their best-of-three championship final series. On Saturday, UNB took Game 1 with a 3-1 victory in front of their home fans.

Tuesday's win wraps up a perfect AUS season for the Reds, who went 30-0 during the regular season before sweeping the Saint Mary's Huskies in their best-of-five semifinal series, and then were victorious in two straight games against Moncton in the championship final.

Both the Reds and Aigles Bleus will now turn their sights to the U SPORTS National Championship, set to be played March 14-17 at TMU in Toronto.

The conference title is the 20th all-time for the UNB program, and tenth in the past 13 years dating back to the 2010-11 season.

Gilmour's game-winning marker came late in the second period when he beat Moncton goalie Olivier Adam (Drummondville, Que.) to give the Reds a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Jason Wilms (Kitchener, Ont.) added an insurance marker on the power-play just over seven minutes into the final period before teammate Isaac Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) scored into an empty net with just 37 seconds left to cement the victory.

League MVP Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont.), who notched assists on all three UNB goals, was named the playoff Most Valuable Player after leading all scorers in the post-season with eight points (1 goal, seven assists) in five post-season games.

Reds goaltender Griffin Outhouse (Williams Lake, B.C.) stopped all 12 shots he faced to finish with a 3-0 playoff record. Adam finished with 35 saves in the loss.
