X-Men hand Reds first loss of season with 4-3 victory

The StFX X-Men remain just one point out of first place after sweeping their weekend games, including handing the defending AUS champions the UNB Reds their first loss of the season.

The X-Men kicked off their weekend with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus, avenging last Saturday's evening loss to the same Moncton squad. Jacob Hudson earned a powerplay tally and an assist in the win and earned the first star and AUS Subway player of the game honours. Other StFX goals came from Liam Hawel, Matthew Struthers and Zack Trott (PP). Joseph Raaymakers made 20 saves to earn the shutout.

Saturday evening, StFX netminder Joseph Raaymakers put up a 48 save performance as the X-Men handed the U SPORTS No. 1 ranked Reds a 4-3 loss and their first of the season. StFX goals came from Struthers, Declan Smith, Conner Bruggen-Cate and Matthew Philip, while UNB goals came from James McEwan, Austen Keating and Joe Gatenby.

Despite the loss to StFX, the Reds picked up two points this weekend with a 4-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night. Nicolas Guay (PP), Brady Gilmour, Keating, and Conner Hall (EN) all found the back of the net in the win, with Shaun Miller scoring the lone goal for Dalhousie in the loss.

The Acadia Axemen snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night, securing a 3-2 overtime win over the Saint Mary's Huskies. Forwards Adam McMaster and Subway First Star of the Game Mason McCarty scored all three of Acadia's goals, with McCarty scoring the first and last goals of the game. Jacob Durham and Joel Bishop recorded tallies for the Huskies.

The Axemen then skated to a 5-2 win over the UPEI Panthers Saturday night. Acadia goals came from McCarty, Cole Rafuse, TJ Fergus, Luke Zazula (PP) and Peyton Hout (EN), while UPEI goals came from TJ Shea and Kyle Maksimovich. Logan Flodell finished with 32 saves in net for Acadia in the win.

The Saint Mary's Huskies returned home Friday night in AUS Men's Hockey action as they played host to the UPEI Panthers, where the Huskies played to a 4-1 victory after scoring three unanswered goals in the third. Saint Mary's goals came from Nathan Dunkley, Mitchell Balmas, Bradey Johnson and Walter Flower III, with Darian Pilon scoring the lone goal for the Panthers.

Saturday night, the Aigles Bleus scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Dalhousie Tigers 7-6 in overtime. Samuel Guilbault scored the game-winning goal for the Aigles Bleus, while Nathael Roy earned Subway player of the game honours with two tallies in the victory.
