AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Round Up: Week 3

Wednesday, Oct. 19

Acadia 1 at Saint Mary's 4 (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies posted a 4-1 win over the Acadia Axemen Wednesday in Halifax. After a scoreless first period, Bronson Beaton and Alex Cord put the Huskies on the board in the second period. 

Marc McNalty answered for the Axemen to start the third period. But Saint Mary's goals from Bradley Latour and Taylor Burke (short-handed) would secure the Huskies win.

Friday, Oct. 21

UPEI 7 at StFX 3 (Box Score)

The UPEI Panthers claimed a hard-fought battle against the StFX X-Men 7-3 in Antigonish Friday. Holden Cook opened the scoring for StFX on the power play in the first period. Cody Payne responded with a short-handed goal for the Panthers and Chad Labelle notched another UPEI marker to take the lead heading into the second.

RT Rice added another Panthers goal less than two minutes into the second frame, before Cook responded with his second goal of the game (short-handed) for StFX.

Eric Locke would tie things up on the power play for StFX to start the third. But four unanswered Panthers goals to finish out the game would secure their 7-3 victory. Payne scored his second goal of the game. Kurt Etchegary, Beau McCue and Riley Whittingham notched a goal apiece—all on the power play—to round out the scoring.

UNB 5 at Dalhousie 4 SHOOTOUT (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds claimed a 5-4 win in a shootout Friday versus the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax. After a scoreless first period, Randy Gazzola, Philippe Maillet (on the power play) and Francis Beauvillier (also on the power play) notched markers for UNB in the second. Colton Parsons, Tanner Williams (on the power play) and Phil Gadoury (also on the power play) responded with a goal apiece for Dalhousie in the second frame. 

In the third frame, UNB's Rob Mignardi (on the power play) and Dalhousie's Andrew Wigginton traded goals to finish with a tie in regulation. UNB went on to win the shootout 3-2.

Saint Mary's 4 at Moncton 5 (Box Score)

The Moncton Aigles Bleus claimed a 5-4 win at home over the Saint Mary's Huskies Friday. Moncton's Steve Lebel and Saint Mary's Hunter Garlent exchanged goals in the opening frame.

Bronson Beaton (on the power play), Francis Menard and Bradley Latour notched a goal apiece for the Huskies in the second period. Joël Blanchard responded for Moncton.

In the third, three unanswered Moncton goals from Mathieu Bernier, Jean-François Plante (on the power play) and Alex Saulnier (also on the power play) would secure the Aigles Bleus victory.

Saturday, Oct. 22

Moncton 4 at Acadia 7 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen claimed a 7-4 victory over the Moncton Aigles Bleus Saturday night in Wolfville, N.S. Michael Clarke and Kyle Farrell scored for Acadia in the first period, while Jean-François Plante responded for Moncton.

Plante scored his second to open the second period scoring, but Farrell and Matthew Pufahl answered for the home team.

The final frame was a back-and-forth affair, with Stephen Harper added a goal to Acadia's tally and Sam Fioretti rounding out the Axemen scoring with two goals. Alex Saulnier scored on the power play for Moncton and Victor Beaulac notched another for the Aigles Bleus with under a minute remaining, but it would not be enough. The Axemen came out on top, 7-4.

UNB 4 at StFX 5 OT (Box Score)

The StFX X-Men earned a 5-4 win in overtime Saturday at home against the UNV Varsity Reds. Rob Mignardi and Philippe Haley scored for the visitors in the opening frame, while Holden Cooke answered for the X-Men.

Cook notched another two goals in the second frame, one on the power play.

Marcus McIvor scored for the visitors to open the third period. Eric Locke responded for the X-Men. UNB's Philippe Maillet tied things up on the power play to force overtime.

StFX's Cook was the overtime hero with his fourth goal and fifth point of the night.

UPEI 1 at Dalhousie 2 SHOOTOUT (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers earned a 2-1 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers Saturday night in Halifax. Phil Gadoury notched the Tigers' lone goal in regulation less than five minutes into the game.

Beau McCue responded for UPEI on the power play in the second frame to tie things up. After a scoreless third period and overtime, Gadoury notched the lone goal of the shootout to secure the Tigers' win.
