Huskies top Aigles Bleus 3-2 in Game 1 of quarterfinals

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-three Subway AUS men's hockey quarter-final playoff series Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum. 

Saint Mary's opened the scoring when Stephen MacAulay (Cole Harbour, N.S.) scored off a backhand rebound at 16:59 on the power play to make it 1-0 after the first period.

In the second period, Moncton responded when Steve Lebel (Lemoyne, Que.) tallied from a bad angle at 3:18 to tie things up at 1-1.

The Huskies took the lead back when Anthony Repaci (Toronto, Ont.) potted a marker in the slot at 13:25 to make it 2-1 after two periods.

In the third, Moncton evened things up again when Alex Emond (Pohenegamook, Que.) scored off a rebound in close at 3:27 on the power play to make the score 2-2.

Saint Mary's a got the game winner when Stephen Gillard (St. John's, N.L.) tallied from the top of the circle at 7:21 on the power play to take the crucial first game of the series.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 37-21.

Cole Cheveldave (Calgary, Alta.) made 19 saves to get the win for the Huskies.

Subway player of the game Adrien Lemay (Moncton, N.B.) stopped 34 shots in goal for the Aigles Bleus.

Game 2 of the series will be played in Moncton this Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
