AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Round Up: Week 13

Friday, February 5

Moncton 2 at StFX 4 (Box Score)

The StFX X-Men hosted the Moncton Aigles Bleus in Antigonish on Friday night. The X-Men struck first with the lone goal of the opening frame at 17:17 from freshman forward Nathan Pancel. Just over two minutes into the second period, a goal from Moncton freshman forward Robbie Graham tied the game at 1-1. At 05:32 in the middle frame, StFX fourth-year defenceman Bronson Maschmeyer gave the X-Men the go-ahead goal, followed by a short-handed tally from teammate Eric Locke to give the X-Men the 3-1 lead heading into the third. At 11:19 into the third period, Moncton's Alex Emond put the Aigles Bleus within one. With under four minutes remaining in regulation, an empty-net goal from StFX's Brent Turnbull put the X-Men ahead by two, as they held on for the 4-2 victory.

Saint Mary's 2 at UNB 6 (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies travelled to Fredericton to take on the UNB Varsity Reds on Friday. After a scoreless first period, the Varsity Reds opened the scoring in the second with a tally from freshman forward hristopher Clapperton at 05:37, followed by a goal from teammate Francis Beauvillier to give UNB the 2-0 lead. At the 14:34 mark of the second, a power-play goal from Saint Mary's fifth-year defenceman Jamie Doornbosch put the Huskies within one, until a goal from UNB forward Cam Braes gave the Varsity Reds the 3-1 lead heading into the final period. Four minutes into the third, a power-play goal from Saint Mary's Bradley Greene cut the Varsity Reds lead to one. With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, UNB came out hot with three goals in six minutes, earning the 6-2 victory. Varsity Reds goals in the third period came from third-year forward Philippe Halley, fourth-year forward Cam Braes (PP), and fifth-year forward Taylor MacDougall.

Acadia 2 at UPEI 1 (OT) (Box Score

The Acadia Axemen travelled the Charlottetown on Friday night to face the UPEI Panthers. After a scoreless first and second period, the Panthers were the first on the board in the third with a tally from freshman forward Chad Labelle at 06:56. Just over a minute later, the Axemen tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from fourth-year forward Mike Cazzola. The game remained tied throughout the remainder of regulation, forcing over time. At the 10:00 mark into over time, a goal from Acadia's Boston Leier allowed the Axemen to earn the 2-1 over time victory.

St. Thomas 1 at Dalhousie 4 (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers hosted the St. Thomas Tommies at the Halifax Forum on Friday night. The Tigers opened the scoring in the first period with a goal at 06:34 from sophomore forward Tanner Williams. Williams' goal was followed by a power-play tally from teammate Andrew Wigginton to put the Tigers ahead by two heading into the second period. After a scoreless middle frame, the Tommies got onto the board in the third, with a goal from Brendan Childerley at 08:26 to cut the Tigers lead to one. With just over a minute remaining in regulation, a short-handed empty-net goal from Dalhousie's Andrew Rieder allowed the Tigers to gain a two goal lead. Just 19 seconds later, a second short-handed empty-net goal from Dalhousie's Tanner Williams allowed the Tigers to earn the 4-2 victory at home.

Saturday, February 6

Moncton 2 at Dalhousie 0 (Box Score)

The Moncton Aigles Bleus travelled to Halifax on Saturday to face the Dalhousie Tigers. The Aigles Bleus opened the scoring early in the first with a power-play tally from sophomore forward Jean-Francois Plante just 03:25 into the opening frame, holding a one goal lead heading into the second period. After a scoreless second period, the Aigles Bleus extended their lead to two at 04:15 into the third with a power-play goal from sophomore defenceman Victor Beaulac, and held on for the 2-0 victory on the road. In net for Moncton was fifth-year goaltender Adrien Lemay, stopping all 42 shots he faced to earn the shut-out.

Saint Mary's 6 at UPEI 2 (Box Score)

The UPEI Panthers hosted the Saint Mary's Huskies in Charlottetown on Saturday night. The Huskies opened the scoring late in the first with a tally from fifth-year forward Matt Tipoff at the 16:54 mark, followed by a goal from teammate Francis Menard to give Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead after the first. In the second frame, a goal from Huskies third-year forward Stephen MacAulay at 06:12, followed by a short-handed tally from teammate Stephen Shipley gave the Huskies a 4-0 edge. At 16:14 into the second period, UPEI's Mason Wilgosh put the Panthers on the board cutting the Huskies lead to three. Just 53 seconds into the third, UPEI forward Marcus Power put the Panthers within two with a power-play goal. At the 13:38 mark of the third, a goal from Saint Mary's sophomore forward Ben Duffy allowed the Huskies to regain their three goal lead. With just two minutes remaining in regulation, Saint Mary's sophomore forward Michael Curtis netted an empty-net goal to allow the Huskies to take the 6-2 victory on the road.

The StFX X-Men hosted the St. Thomas Tommies in Antigonish on Saturday. The Tommies opened the scoring early in the first with a goal just over a minute in from sophomore forward Jason Cameron to take the 1-0 lead. With just eight seconds remaining in the first, StFX fourth-year forward Brad Cuzner put the X-Men on the board to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second. Just 01:09 into the middle frame, StFX sophomore forward Adam Stevens gave the X-Men the go ahead goal. In the last nine minutes of the second frame, the X-Men scored four goals to give them the 6-1 edge heading into the final period of regulation. StFX second period goals came from sophomore forward Kristoff Kontos (PP), freshman forward Holden Cook, freshman forward Mark Tremaine (SH), and fourth-year forward Steven Kuhn (SH). At the 11:00 mark of the third, StFX's Holden Cook scored his second of the night as the X-Men held on to the 7-1 victory.

Acadia 4 at UNB 7 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen travelled to Fredericton to face the UNB Varsity Reds on Saturday evening. The Axemen opened the scoring in the first with a tally from fourth-year forward Mike Cazzola just 01:09 into the frame. A power-play goal from UNB's Cameron Brace at 07:02 tied the game at 1-1 until a goal just 58 seconds later from Acadia's Boston Leier allowed the Axemen to regain their lead. A Power-play goal from UNB's Christopher Clapperton at 09:48 into the first, followed by a tally from teammate Rob Mignardi allowed the Varsity Reds to gain the 3-2 lead heading into the second. Just over a minute into the second, a power-play goal from Acadia's Sam Firoetti tied the game back up at 3-3, until a goal just three minutes later from UNB's Christopher Clapperton allowed the Varsity Reds to regain their lead. At the 15:07 mark of the second, a goal from UNB's Tyler Carroll gave the Varsity Reds the 5-3 edge heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation. Just over three minutes into the third, a goal from UNB's Cameron Brace and his second of the game put the Varsity Reds ahead by three. With under five minutes remaining in regulation, a power-play goal from Acadia fourth-year forward Brett Thompson cut the Varsity Reds lead to two, until an empty-net goal from UNB fifth-year forward Taylor MacDougall with just 35 seconds remaining in regulation allowed the Varsity Reds to earn the 7-4 victory over the Axemen.
