AUS Men's Hockey Weekly Roundup: Week 4

Friday, October 30

The Moncton Aigles Bleus visited the Dalhousie Tigers at the Halifax Forum on Friday night. After a scoreless first period, a power play goal from Tigers freshman forward Phil Gadoury put Dalhousie on the board first with a tally at 03:32 into the second period. However goals from Aigles Bleus defenceman Sebastien Gauthier and a power play goal from Alex Emond put Moncton up 2-1 heading into the third. In the third period, goals from Moncton forwards Alex Saulnier and Alex Noel gave the Aigles Bleus the 4-1 edge. With 20 seconds left in the game, Tyler Noseworthy scored a short-handed goal for Dalhousie, but it would not be enough as the Aigles Bleus topped the Tigers 4-2.

Acadia 3 at UNB 2 OT (Box Score)

The UNB Varsity Reds looked for their fifth straight win on the season as they hosted the Acadia Axemen in Fredericton on Friday night. UNB opened the scoring in the first period, as a tally from sophomore forward Cameron Brace put the Varsity Reds on the board. In the second, Acadia forward Travis Randell evened the scoring at 1-1, and was quickly followed by a power play goal from teammate Brett Thompson, giving the Axemen the 2-1 edge. Late in the second, Varsity Reds fourth-year forward Cam Critchlow tallied a goal to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless third period, the game would head into overtime. In overtime, Axemen sophomore forward Zachery Franko scored to give Acadia the 3-2 victory, handing UNB their first loss of the season.

St. Thomas 3 at StFX 5 (Box Score)

The St. Thomas Tommies searched for their first win of the season on Friday night as they travelled to Antigonish to take on the StFX X-Men. St. Thomas opened the scoring in the first, with a goal from sophomore forward Zach Hall, but was followed by a goal from StFX freshman forward Holden Cook, to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the second. Goals in the second period came from StFX sophomore forward Adam Stevens and Kristoff Kontos, and St. Thomas sophomore forward Shane McColgan, giving the X-Men the 3-2 edge going into the third period. In the third, goals from StFX sophomore forward Trey Lewis and freshman forward Nathan Pancel put the X-Men ahead by three. At 19:40 in the third, Tommies Zach Hall scored a power play goal and his second of the game, but it would not be enough as StFX earned the 5-3 victory over St. Thomas.

Saint Mary's 4 at UPEI 2 (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies travelled to Charlottetown on Friday night to face the UPEI Panthers. Saint Mary's opened the scoring early in the first with a goal from fourth-year forward Bradley Greene, but was soon followed by a tally from UPEI freshman forward Sam Aulie to tie the game at 1-1. A goal from Huskies Anthony Repaci at 12:18 in the first gave Saint Mary's the one goal lead heading into the second. In the second, a power play goal from UPEI sophomore forward Darcy Ashley tied the game at 2-2. In the third period, a goal from Saint Mary's third-year forward Stephen MacAulay and a power play goal from teammate Calder Brooks gave the Huskies a two goal lead, and the 4-2 victory.

Saturday, October 31

Moncton 6 at StFX 5 

The StFX X-Men fell to the Moncton Aigles Bleus on Saturday night in an exciting 6-5 overtime loss. The X-Men opened the scoring in the first period, with a goal from freshman Mark Tremaine. It was a busy second period, with six goals in the frame. Goals in the second came from Aigles Bleus Alex Saulnier (3) and Alex Noel (PP), and X-Men Eric Locke and Nathan Chiarlitti, giving Moncton the 4-3 edge heading into the third. At 10:09 of the third period, Allain Saulnier gave Moncton a 5-3 edge. At 16:13, AUS leading goal scorer Eric Locke scored a power play goal for the X-Men to cut the Aigles Bleus lead by one. StFX freshman Michael Clarke tallied a goal for the X-Men with 12 seconds remaining in the third, to tie the game at 5-5, forcing overtime. In overtime, Aigles Bleus forward Steve Lebel gave Moncton the 6-5 victory over StFX with a tally during a 4-on-3 power play.

St. Thomas 1 at Dalhousie 5 (Box Score)

The Dalhousie Tigers hosted the St. Thomas Tommies at the Halifax Forum on Saturday night. Dalhousie opened the scoring in the first with a tally from Jackson Playfair, but a power play goal from St. Thomas fourth-year forward Colin Martin would tie the game at 1-1. In the second period, Dalhousie netted three goals to gain the 4-1 edge, with two tallies from freshman forward Phil Gadoury, and a power play goal from fourth-year defenceman Matt English. In the third period, an empty net goal and his third of the game from Phil Gadoury allowed the Tigers to sail to a 5-1 victory.

Saint Mary's 2 at UNB 5 (Box Score)

The Saint Mary's Huskies travelled to Fredericton on Friday night to take on the UNB Varsity Reds. At 07:28 in the first period, Saint Mary's Stephen Shipley put the Huskies on the board, but was followed by a power play goal from UNB sophomore forward Cameron Brace, and a tally from teammate Alex Wall, to give the Varsity Reds a 2-1 edge going into the second. In the second period, goals from Varsity Reds sophomore forward Christopher Caissy and Huskies freshman forward Anthony Repaci kept UNB ahead by one. In the third, UNB fifth-year defenceman Alex Wall scored his second of the game, followed by a tally from teammate Francis Beauvillier, giving the Varsity Reds the 5-2 victory over the Huskies.

Acadia 4 at UPEI 1 (Box Score)

The Acadia Axemen earned the 4-1 victory on Saturday night as they visited the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown. Panthers Darcy Ashley opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first, giving UPEI the 1-0 edge heading into the second. At 05:53 in the second period, a penalty shot from Acadia sophomore forward Daniel Pettersson tied the game at 1-1. A power play goal in the second period from Acadia forward Boston Leier, and a tally from teammate Michael Clarke put the Axemen ahead by two. With just over a minute to play in regulation, Mike Cazzola ensured the win for Acadia, as the Axemen topped the Panthers 4-1.
