OT victory for Huskies over Axemen

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Hockey fans at the Halifax Forum fans were treated to great AUS hockey action Wednesday evening as theCIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies top the No. 3-ranked Acadia Axemen 4-3 in overtime.

Kyle Pereira (Brampton, Ont.) scored on the power play at 4:18 of extra time to give the Huskies the win. Pereira's big tally earned him Subway player of the game honours.

Saint Mary's opened the scoring in the first period when Stephen MacAulay (Cole Harbour, N.S.) scored on the power play at 17:14 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. 

Acadia evened things up early in the second, when Brett Thompson (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) notched a marker at 3:26 to tie the score at 1-1 after two periods. 

In the third period, Acadia took the lead when Boston Leier (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored at 4:35 to make the score 2-1. The Axemen quickly extended their lead when Remy Giftopoulos (Ancaster, Ont.) tallied at 5:46 to give Acadia a 3-1 lead. 

At 19:06 Saint Mary's cut into the lead when Stephen Johnston (Guelph, Ont.) scored to bring the game to within one goal at 3-2. The  Less than 30 seconds later, the Huskies tied the game in dramatic fashion when MacAulay scored his second goal of the night at 19:34 to tie things up and send the game to overtime.

The Axemen outshot the Huskies 49-30 in the contest. Fourth-year goalie, Anthony Peters (Blyth, Ont.) made 46 saves to get the win in net for Saint Mary's. Brandon Glover stopped 26 shots in goal for the Axemen

The Huskies and Axemen both return to action this Friday night. Saint Mary's visits the St. Thomas Tommies in Fredericton, while the Axemen host the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in Wolfville.
