Huskies down Tigers 5-1 in all-Halifax battle

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 5-1 on Saturday night at the Halifax Forum in the latest round of the battle of Halifax.

The Huskies have had the Tigers' number as of late, winning the last six regular season matchups. The last time the Tigers beat the Huskies was on Nov. 20, 2013.

The win improves the Huskies' record to 13-5-1 on the season as they sit in third place in the AUS with 27 points, just two points back from the Acadia Axemen for first in the league.

The loss drops the Tigers to 5-13-1 on the season. They're on the outside looking in when it comes to the AUS playoff picture, as they trail the Université de Moncton by five points for the final playoff spot.

Kyle Pereira led the Huskies with two goals, while Cameron Wind Steven Beyers added three assists in the win.

Pereira scored his fifth goal of the season just 2:54 into the first period to open the scoring for the Huskies early. The Tigers responded with just 40 seconds left in the period when Andrew Wigginton converted on the power play after Stephen MacAulay took a slashing penalty.

Michael Curtis scored seven minutes into the second to give the Huskies a lead midway through the second period.

Pereira and Cameron Wind followed it up, each netting a goal, as the Huskies scored three goals in under four minutes and opened up a 4-1 lead.

Steven Shipley added insult to injury when he scored the Huskies' second power play goal of the game to seal the deal for Saint Mary's as they went on to win 5-1.

The Tigers will try to get back in the win column when they face the UPEI Panthers next Saturday. The Huskies will take on the Université de Moncton, also on Saturday.
