Huskies down X-Men 4-1 in Antigonish

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies (2-4) skated to a 4-1 win over the StFX X-Men (2-4) in AUS hockey action Saturday night at the Keating Centre in Antigonish.

First star of the game Cory Tanaka recorded a goal and an assist for the winners.

After the X-Men opened the scoring, the Huskies tallied four unanswered goals, cruising to their second victory of the regular season.

At 10:11 of the first period, Steven Kuhn gave the X-Men a 1-0 lead. Zack MacQueen assisted on the marker. At 14:28, Tanaka scored the tying goal, with assists coming from Jeff Marchand and Stephen Gillard. Saint Mary's outshot StFX 9-6 in the first period.

In the second period, dominated by the Huskies, Stephen Beyers gave his team a 2-1 advantage at 7:38. The forward slid a puck under X-Men goalie Morgan Clark from the edge of the crease off a face-off. Tanaka had the lone assist. The Huskies had a 13-6 edge in shots on goal in the second period.

Saint Mary's scored the only two goals of the third period. At 16:10, Stephen Johnston whistled a low slap shot by Clark on a two-on-one breakaway. Jamie Doornbosch and Lucas Bloodoff garnered the helpers. Michael Strickland, from Beyers and Gillard, wrapped up the scoring at 18:46.

Curtis Black made 23 saves for the Huskies, while Clark blocked 24 shots.

Clark was named the third star of the game, while Beyers, who had two points, earned second star honours.

The X-Men wore specialty camouflage jerseys in honour of Military Appreciation Night as Remembrance Day approaches.

The X-Men return to action Wednesday, Nov. 6, when they travel to Halifax to face the Dalhousie Tigers at 7 p.m. The Huskies will host the Acadia Axemen Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
