Reds remain undefeated after three weeks of play

The UNB Reds earned their sixth straight win to remain undefeated this season, while the Saint Mary's Huskies and Acadia Axewomen earned sweeps to extend their win streaks.

Reese Baxendale scored 13 points to help her new team get past her old team as the UNB Reds beat the UPEI Panthers 85-63, Friday night at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center. Jayda Veinot led the Reds with 20 points and eight rebounds, earning the Tim Hortons Player of the Game honours. Katie Butts hit two career milestones in Friday's game, surpassing 400 points and 300 rebounds in her AUS regular season career for the Reds. Samantha Zoffranieri led the Panthers in the loss, netting a team-high 19 points

The U SPORTS No. 7 ranked Reds then scored a 65-54 win over the Panthers on Saturday, completing a two-game weekend sweep. Jayda Veinot led the Reds with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, while Erin Ingalls added 13 points and eight rebounds. Ingalls was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game. UPEI's Lauren Rainford led all scorers with 18 points while Elise Plaschka grabbed seven rebounds for the Panthers. 

The Acadia Axewomen earned their third and fourth-straight wins this weekend as they swept the Cape Breton Capers in back-to-back games. The Axewomen picked up a big 72-44 victory over the Capers Friday night. It was a team effort for Acadia, with three of five starters finishing in double figures, two of which had double-doubles. Player of the game Samantha Russell  had 19 points and 10 boards for the Axewomen, while Elizabeth Iseyemi had 18 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double of the season. Lisa Bolander led the team with 23 points. For the Capers, Kiyara Letlow had 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for her team's only double-double of the game. The game-high in scoring came from Cape Breton's Chermensa van la Parra who finished with 26 points.

With 8.1 seconds on the clock and the Cape Breton Capers up by a point, Acadia's Bianca Helmig stole the inbound pass from Cape Breton's Hannah Smith and finished her layup to give the Axewomen a 61-60 victory on Saturday night. Helmig finished the night with six points, while Samantha Russell led the way for the Axewomen with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds for Acadia's lone double-double of the game. The Capers were led by Kiyara Letlow's 19 points and 14 rebounds. Chermensa van la Parra had a solid weekend to follow her Friday night performance as she finished with 18 points on Saturday.

The Huskies started things off against their crosstown rival Dalhousie Tigers Wednesday night, earning an 87-56 victory. Lucina Beaumount led the Huskies in the win with a game-high 18 points, earning Player of the Game honours, while Dalhousie was led by Sydney Guker-Wickie who finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

The U SPORTS #6 ranked Huskies then defeated the Tigers 95-44 on Friday night at the Homburg Centre. Player of the Game Aki Kobayashi led the Huskies with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in just 19 minutes off the bench. Forward Lucina Beaumont chipped in 14 points and guards Courtney Donaldson and Clara Gascoigne scored 13 points each, with Marlo Steenbakkers delivering an 11-point, 11 rebound double-double off the bench. Sydney Guker-Wickie led the Tigers with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Memorial Sea-Hawks fell short after a tough battle against the StFX X-Women Friday night, with the X-Women earning a 71-60 victory for their first regular season win. The top scorers of the game came from Katie Upham and Kristine Cooper with 18 points each for StFX. Shannon Neita scored 10 points. For the Sea-Hawks the top scorer was Alyssa Jenkins with 14 points, while Hannah Green finished with 12 points, and Alana Short scored 11.

The Sea-Hawks bounced back Saturday night, edging the X-Women 60-54 in St. John's. Alana Short led the Sea-Hawks with 14 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block, while Rebecka Eckstrom and Brooke LeDevehat scored 10 and 9 points, respectively. For the X-Women, Katie Upham finished with a game-high 16 points, adding four rebounds, six assists and one block.
