Huskies finish 20-0 with weekend sweep of Seahawks

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The CIS No. 2-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies extended their win streak and defeated the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks 76-56 Friday evening and 87-51 Saturday afternoon in AUS women's basketball action at the Homburg Centre this weekend.

In Friday night's game, Saint Mary's outscored the Sea-Hawks 22-13 in the second quarter en route to their 19th straight win.

CIS all-time scoring leader, the Huskies' Justine Colley, led all scorers with 21 points, eight assists and six rebounds on the night.

Carlie Nugent, Rachelle Coward and Katrina Murrell also scored in double digits for the Huskies with 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively.

Laura Langille pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Huskies while Colley's eight assists paced Saint Mary's on the court.

A tight first quarter saw the Huskies hold a two-point lead, 16-14, before the second quarter outburst had them up 38-27 at half.

Saint Mary's extended their lead 57-43 after thirty minutes before holding the Sea-Hawks to 13 points in the final frame.

Memorial's Chante Clarke had 12 points and Lindsay Taylor had 10 points in the loss.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Becky Nash with six points, Langille and Emily Jameson with five points each and Angelina Carvery with four points.

The Huskies out-rebounded the Sea-Hawks 48-37.

In the second game of the weekend series, Saint Marys defeated the visiting Sea-Hawks 87-51.

Saint Mary's outscored Memorial 20-9 in the fourth quarter en route to their 20th straight win.

Justine Colley once again led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds on the night.

Katrina Murrell and Emily Jameson each had 16 points for the Huskies, who finish the AUS regular season unbeaten (20-0).  

Laura Langille scored a dozen points for Saint Mary's while Alexandra Smye added nine points.

The first few minutes of the opening quarter saw the Huskies hold a 12-8 lead with 5:05 left in quarter before going on a 11-4 run to close the opening frame up 23-12.

Saint Mary's outscored Memorial 22-18 in the second quarter and the Huskies were up 45-30 at half.

The Huskies extended their lead to 67-42 after thirty minutes before holding the Sea-Hawks to only nine points in the final frame.

Memorial's Kelia Pond had 11 points and Lindsay Taylor had nine points in the loss for the Sea-Hawks who finish the year at 9-11 and fourth in the AUS standings.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Rachelle Coward with eight points, Carlie Nugent with five points and Becky Nash with two points.

The Huskies out-rebounded the Sea-Hawks 53-36.

The Huskies are the No. 1 seed headed into the Subway AUS women's basketball championship, which will be hosted by UPEI March 7-9.
