(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - In women's basketball action today at the Richard J. Currie Center the Varsity Reds defeated the Acadia Axewomen by a score of 64-49.
The monkey is finally off their backs. The women had previously lost nine straight games, many of them in the fourth quarter. Today they got ahead and stayed ahead.
"Yes, I think the game was probably won in the first quarter; we had a 19-5 lead and played with enough poise from there on," said UNB head coach Jeff Speedy. "It felt like it was getting close a few times but it really wasn't. The lead stayed above 10 for the rest of the game."
The V-Reds did better on both ends of the court, putting Acadia's leading point getter Abby Duinker off her game and holding her to five of 23 field goal attempts. The inside post play of both Katelyn Mangold (15 points, nine rebounds) and Rachel Cleary (12 points, seven rebounds) was excellent, and Mangold was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.
The V-Reds were 85.7 per cent in free throw percentage and did a better job on three-pointers as Colleen Daly corralled three.
Awo Farah was 5-for-5 in free throws while netting a total of 13 points for the red and black.
The Varsity Reds' next games are on the road as they head out for their last regular season Nova Scotia trip to take on Cape Breton and StFX Feb. 21 and 22.
