Top-ranked Huskies extend winning streak to 10 with win over UPEI

(HALIFAX, N.S.) The CIS No. 1-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 88-51 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Saturday night.

A trio of Saint Mary's players had twenty or more points and the Huskies defence used a one-point halftime lead to hold UPEI to single-digit scoring in the third and fourth quarters.

Saint Mary's held a 21-17 first quarter lead before both teams traded baskets to open the second quarter.

With 5:49 left in the half, Huskies guard Justine Colley's layup pushed the lead to 25-22 followed by a 5-0 run to go up 30-22.

A 6-0 run by UPEI in 59 seconds chipped the Saint Mary's lead to 30-28 when Emily Jameson hit a pair of free throws for a 32-28 Huskies lead with 1:40 in the half.

A Panther jump shot and layup tied the game 32-32 with 56 seconds to play.

Saint Mary's guard Rachelle Coward's layup was followed by two Panther free throws and a Huskies layup to end the half 35-34 SMU.

A 12-4 run to end the third quarter saw the Huskies increase their lead to 58-42.

Saint Mary's outscored UPEI 30-9 in the fourth quarter and had 53 points in the second half for the 88-51 win.

The Huskies' Laura Langille led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds in 36 minutes.

Coward and Colley each had 20 points for Saint Mary's who improve their record to 10-0 in AUS play.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Emily Jameson with 12 points; Carlie Nugent and Alexandra Syme added three points each and Becky Nash had two points.

Saint Mary's Katrina Murrell had five points and 11 rebounds and Angelina Carvery had two points and pulled down 10 boards.

UPEI's Danielle MacDonald had 14 points and Amy Gough chipped in nine points for the Panthers who fall to 4-6 in AUS play.

Saint Mary's shot 44.4 per cent from the field (32-72) compared to UPEI's 27.7 per cent (18-65).

The Huskies were 6-16 from three-point range while UPEI was 1-14.

SMU held a 55-36 rebound advantage.

The Panthers will next see action Friday, Jan. 17 when they visit the Acadia Axewomen. The Huskies resume play Saturday, Jan. 18 when they visit the Cape Breton Capers. Tip-off for both games is set for 6 p.m.
