Huskies beat Capers 87-59 to win weekend series

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Fifth-year guard Justine Colley paced the CIS No. 1-ranked SMU Huskies Saturday evening with 24 points in a 87-59 Atlantic University Sport women's basketball win over the visiting Cape Breton Capers.

With the win, Saint Mary's sits atop the AUS at 6-0 on the year while Cape Breton falls to 3-3 in conference play.  Guard Rachelle Coward had 10 points in the first half as the Huskies got out to a 39-27 lead at halftime.

Teams traded free throws starting the third quarter when a 10-4 Saint Mary's run extended the 50-33 lead over the Capers. Cape Breton answered right back with a quick three pointer at the 5:30 mark and both teams exchanged baskets for a 64-44 Huskies lead after three quarters.

Using an 18-5 run to open the fourth quarter, Saint Mary's scored 23 points in the frame. Colley's 24 points led all scorers and she was named the Subway Player of the Game for her efforts. Her performance also included six rebounds, two assists and four steals on the night.

Laura Langille added 18 points and eight boards while Coward finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Katrina Murrell contributed nine points and both Angelina Carvery and Carlie Nugent had eight points on the night. Emily Jameson and Alexandra Smye each had four points while Batoul Kababji chipped in two points.

Saint Mary's shot 45.3 per cent from the field compared to Cape Breton's 34.4 per cent. The Huskies made 24 for 27 from the foul line while Cape Breton made 13 of 24 foul shots.

The Huskies had a slight rebound advantage, 42-40 over the Capers but had 12 more points in the paint, 40-28 for the difference.

Cape Breton forwards Alison Keough had 19 points and Colleen Keane added 17 points.

Saint Mary's returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 27 when they visit the Dal Tigers at 6 p.m.

The Capers host the UPEI Panthers Friday, Nov. 29, also at 6 p.m.
