(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The CIS No. 1-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Cape Breton Capers 77-53 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Friday night. The Huskies were down 0-4 early in the first quarter and used a 20-2 spurt to lead 20-6 after 10 minutes.

The second quarter saw the Capers score a quick basket early on and the Huskies went over four minutes without a point. With 5:50 left in the second quarter, third-year forward Laura Langille sank a tough inside shot for a 22-10 Saint Mary's advantage.

Huskies guards Rachelle Coward and Justine Colley continued the scoring with a three-point bomb for Coward and a nice end-to-end bucket by Colley. Coward added a bucket underneath before a pair of free throws by Cape Breton brought the score to 29-12.

Huskies forward Carlie Nugent caught the scoring bug as she scored the next six points for a 35-12 cushion when Cape Breton called a time-out with 2:05 left in the first half. Saint Mary's guard Angelina Carvery hit a foul shot and scored inside for a 38-17 Huskies halftime lead.

Third quarter action saw the pace increase as Coward and Colley scored followed by a Caper basket for a 42-19 Saint Mary's lead. A three pointer and three free throws made by Coward extended the lead to 48-21. Both teams traded baskets the last six minutes for a 58-30 Huskies lead.

The fourth quarter turned out to be the Emily Jameson show. The first-year Saint Mary's guard earned the Subway Player of the Game award for her 18-point performance in only 12 minutes of court action. The St. John's, N.L. native added four rebounds on eight-for-13 shooting, including two-for-four beyond three-point land.

Coward led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, nine rebounds and one steal. Langille finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Nugent and Colley each had eight points on the night. Forward Katrina Murrell had four points while Carvery added three points in the win.

Cape Breton's Colleen Keane had 12 points for the Capers who fall to 3-2 on the year. Saint Mary's improves to 5-0 this season.

Huskies head coach Scott Munro was pleased with the outcome and getting everyone into the game. "All wins are good. We played pretty well to get up by a pretty good margin to start the fourth (quarter)," he said. "I thought we played well defensively for three quarters. We were able to take on what we wanted to do and make some shots when we had to. It was good to get some people some extended runs tonight and give them on opportunity."

The turnaround will be quick for both teams as Saint Mary's will host Cape Breton Saturday afternoon and Munro says they will be ready for the 4 p.m. tipoff. "The focus doesn't change. We need the same effort from the beginning of the game with defensive rebounds and hopefully if we do that we'll be able to capitalize at the end of the night."
