UNB downs Moncton 3-0 to advance to men's soccer semifinals

(SYDNEY, N.S.) The no. 3 seed UNB Reds downed the sixth-seeded Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-0 Thursday evening in the first men's quarterfinal game in the Subway AUS Soccer Championships.

The men's championship is being hosted concurrently with the women's by Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S.

Veteran striker and AUS first team all-star Dan Walker (Fredericton, N.B.) opened up the scoring with the eventual game-winner in the first half.

The Reds took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Third-year midfielder Matt Quigley (Conquerall Mills, N.S.) added to UNB's lead in the second half with a goal in the 64th minute assisted by AUS rookie of the year Tristan Nkoghe (Sherbrooke, Que.).

The Reds third and final goal came from second-year striker Grant Takacs (Woodstock, Ont,), assisted by first-year striker Maximus Corre-Manhu (Markham, Ont.) in the 87th minute.

With three shots on goal and the game-winning goal, Walker was named Subway Player of the Game.

Moncton's Thomas Maillet (Moncton, N.B.) was named player of the game in the loss for the Aigles Bleus.

The Reds now advance to face the no. 2 seed StFX X-Men (8-3-1) in tomorrow's second men's semifinal matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

UNB and StFX met just once during the regular season back on Sept. 8 in Antigonish, N.S. The X-Men came away with a 2-0 win in that game.
