(SYDNEY, N.S.) The No. 3-seeded UNB Varsity Reds rode three first-half goals to a 3-0 win over the No. 6 Memorial University Sea-Hawks in the quarter-final round at the 2017 Subway AUS Men's Soccer Championship being hosted by Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S.

Alex O'Brien (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) scored what would turn out to be the game-winner just four minutes in.

He got a head on a shot by Max Vitrotti (London, England) and deflected it into the Memorial net.

Luis Garcia (San Antonio, Texas) and Dan Walker (Fredericton, N.B.) added goals about two minutes apart late in the half.

Garcia was named Subway Player of the Game for UNB. Alex Pretty earned the honour for the Sea-Hawks.

The V-Reds played solid defence in the second half, earning a berth in the semi-final round.

Evan Barker (Winnipeg, Man.) was called on to make just one save to earn the clean sheet in the Varsity Reds net.

UNB will now face the No. 2-seeded St FX X-Men, Friday at 7 p.m.

The X-Men finished the regular season in second place with a 9-1-2 record.

The two teams met only once during the regular season, at UNB's BMO Centre, on Sept 17. X scored a late goal to escape with a 1-0 win.
