(ST. JOHN'S, NFLD.) - The CIS No. 2-ranked UNB Varsity Reds are the winners of the 2014 Subway AUS men's soccer championship after their 2-1 win over the Cape Breton Capers at King George V park on Sunday.

This is the second consecutive year UNB has taken home the AUS championship banner.

The Varsity Reds were led by Oliver Jones (London, U.K.), who scored both UNB goals to earn the most valuable player honours of the championship. Keeper Aaron McMurray (London, U.K.) took the Subway AUS player of the game honours.

The Varsity Reds set the pace early with a great scoring opportunity from Marcus Lees (Barrie, Ont.) in the third minute of the game that was just wide of the net.

Cape Breton was quick to return the pressure and in the seventh minute, Mark Stewart (Liverpool, U.K.) put forth a play that saw the ball reach the back of the net but was given an offside call.

The Varsity Reds dominated the next 15 minutes of play with five more attempts on the Capers net.

It was Jones who capitalized on the next opportunity and in the 29th minute got past Cape Breton keeper Josh Lines (Taunton, U.K.).

Cape Breton took a number of injuries towards the end of the first half and saw forwards Justin Maheu (Ottawa, Ont.) and Max Rabb (Elora, Ont.) leave the field.

Going into halftime, the score was 1-0 for UNB.

As the rain picked up, Jones repeated his performance from the first and netted the Varsity Reds their second goal of the game in the 56th minute.

The Capers were relentless in their attempt to even up the game with an impressive nine attempts on UNB's net before Stuart Heath (Belfast, Ireland) got passed keeper McMurray and put Cape Breton on the board in the 85th minute.

UNB's back line worked effectively together to stop the speedy Capers from finding the back of the net in the last minutes of the game. The Varsity Reds would win the championship final with a 2-1 victory.

UNB now advances to compete in the CIS men's soccer championship being hosted by UPEI November 6-9 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
