Late goal gives Huskies victory in season opener

(ST. JOHN'S, N.L.) - Billy Kennedy's goal in the 83rd minute was the difference as the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies claimed a 1-0 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Saturday at King George Vth Park in AUS men's soccer play.

The wind was a factor in the game. The home team outshot the visitors 4-1 in the first half with the wind at their back. In the second half the Huskies had four shots on Memorial keeper Michael Bartellas.

Bartellas looked sharp throughout the match but Kennedy's strike got past him late to earn the visitors the win.

Shortly after Kennedy's goal, Saint Mary's senior defender Zach Bauld picked up his second yellow card of the match. The Sea-Hawks attempted to even the score with the man advantage but the Saint Mary's defence held them off.

Kennedy, a second-year midfielder, was the Subway Player of the Game for the winners. Fourth-year defender Matthew Hamlyn was Memorial's player of the game.

The teams will be back on the pitch tomorrow afternoon at 1:15 p.m. to finish their weekend series.
