Capers upset Varsity Reds to capture AUS men's soccer title

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) — The third-seeded Cape Breton Capers won three games in three days, including a 2-0 shutout win over the top-seeded UNB Varsity Reds, to capture the program's third AUS men's soccer banner since 2007 Sunday afternoon in Charlottetown.

Keeper Andrew Murphy (Liverpool, England) was named the tournament MVP after turning aside all 11 shots he faced in Sunday's final for his second shutout in as many days.

Murphy also kept the defending champion and CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies off the scoresheet in a 1-0 win over the Huskies Saturday evening that went into penalty kicks.

The 6-foot-4 fifth-year senior made a number of spectacular saves over the course of the weekend and also scored his first career goal, the game-winning penalty kick against Saint Mary's.

The Capers took a 1-0 lead late in the first half Sunday after striker Ian Greedy (Lower Sackville, N.S.) scored in the 41st minute. The second half remained scoreless until Bruno Mota (Gatineau, Que.) netted an insurance marker with only three minutes left to play.

Cape Breton also won the AUS title in 2007 and again in 2009.

The Capers and V-Reds will now head to Quebec City and look to capture a national banner as both advance to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's soccer championship hosted by Université Laval.

The CIS tournament will run from Thursday to Sunday, with the match-ups being announce later tonight.
