Tigers shutout Aigles Bleus to open men's soccer championship

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) - The fifth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers defeated the No. 4 seed Moncton Aigles-Bleus 1-0 in the opening game of the 2012 Subway AUS men's soccer championship Friday afternoon at UPEI.

The lone goal of the game was scored in the 67th minute by Dalhousie's Nathan Rogers on penalty kick.

The first half was scoreless, with each team committing fouls on aggressive play. In the opening 45 minutes, Moncton had ten chances with three on net, racked up seven fouls and earned two corner kicks. Dalhousie was credit with seven shots, two on goal, but had only four fouls and one corner.

Second half followed suit as Moncton earned ten more fouls and were shown three yellow cards, one of which provided Rogers with the penalty shotl.

Jason Ross recorded the shutout as Dalhousie outshot Moncton 17-15, including 10-5 in the second half. Samuel Charron made five saves in a losing effort for the Aigles Bleus.

The Tigers will next face the top-seedeed UNB Varsity Reds in Saturday's first semifinal at 2:00pm
