Capers defeat UPEI 3-2 to eliminate host Panthers

(CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I.) - In the second quarterfinal match of the 2012 Subway AUS men's soccer championship, the third-seeded Cape Breton Capers defeated the sixth-seeded and host UPEI Panthers by a score of 3-2 in front of over 400 fans who braved the rainy conditions

CBU's Shayne Hollis scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute, but UPEI responded two minutes later with a goal off the foot of Kieran Dutton. Dutton's goal came on a shot that deflected off the finger tips of Capers keeper Andy Murphy, hit the crossbar and dropped into the net.

In the 35th minute, fourth-year midfielder Jason Massie, named an AUS all-star Thursday evening, was shown a red card, forcing the Capers to finish the game with 10 players. Massie will also miss Saturday's semifinal game as a result of the ejection.

CBU didn't run out of steam as striker Bruno Mota scored the Capers second goal of the half in the 43rd minute off a nicely placed free kick that skipped pat UPEI keeper Trevor White.

The Capers added an insurance marker in the 82nd minute as Subway player of the game Shayne Hollis found the back of the net with his second of the game.

UPEI made a final push in stoppage time as Ibrahima Sanoh scored his second goal of the game, but that was as close as they would come as the Capers walked off with a 3-2 victory.

UPEI and CBU each recorded seven shots on goal. UPEI outfouled its opponent 10-8, while picking up two yellow cards. The Capers finished with one yellow and one red. The Capers led in corner kicks, 9-6.

The Capers now advance to Saturday's semifinals where they will face the defending champion and No. 2 seed Saint Mary's Huskies at 5:00 pm.
