AUS Men's Basketball Weekly Roundup: Week 1

Friday, November 6

UNB 63 at Dalhousie 68 (Box Score)

In the first night of regular season men's basketball action on Friday night, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted the UNB Varsity Reds. After the Dalhousie Tigers holding a 19-16 lead going into the second quarter, the Varsity Reds bounced back to take a 37-34 lead after the first half. After a strong comeback third quarter the Tigers held a 55-54 lead. The fourth quarter saw the Tigers take their biggest lead of the night with 58-54, from a three-pointer from Tigers Sven Stammberger. The Tigers held on to take the 68-63 victory over the Varsity Reds. Stammberger led the Tigers with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist, while the reigning AUS scoring leader Javon Masters led UNB with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

Acadia 82 at Cape Breton 77 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers opened their season at home on Friday night against the Acadia Axemen. The Axemen held the lead for the whole game, as they held a 26-13 lead through one quarter and 42-35 after the first half. The while the Capers battled throughout, the visitors escaped with the victory. Third quarter action saw Acadia continue the lead, but with the Capers close behind for a score of 59-55 Axemen heading into the final qurater. Although the Capers picked up from their slow start, they would not be able to top the Axemen as Acadia topped Cape Breton 82-77. Cedric Kasongo led the Capers with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Capers while Kyle Arsenault led the Axemen with 20 points and nine boards.

StFX 71 at UPEI 102 (Box Score)

In their season opener, the UPEI Panthers hosted the StFX X-Men in Charlottetown on Friday night. After the Panthers and X-Men were tied at 23 after the first quarter, the Panthers capitalized on a strong second quarter to lead the X-Men 56-32 at the half. The X-Men scored 17 points in the third quarter, while the Panthers scored 27, increasing their lead to 83-49. The Panthers would finish with a 102-71 victory in their home opener over the X-Men, with Tyler Scott leading UPEI with 32 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists on the game. Tristan Ross was the X-Men's leading scorer with 14 points on the night.

Saturday, November 7

StFX 91 at UPEI 95 (Box Score)

In their second meeting of the weekend, the UPEI Panthers topped the StFX X-Men 95-91. The X-Men held the lead through the first half, finishing the first quarter ahead 28-21 and the second quarter 50-46 over the Panthers. The Panthers outscored the the X-Men in the third and fourth quartes by 22-18, and 27-23, allowing UPEI to take the lead for a 95-91 final. The X-Men were led by guard Julius Antoine who finished with 32 points, including an 8-for-12 effort from three-point range, as well as three rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot for StFX. Tyler Scott led the Panthers with a team-high 33 points, including five three-point baskets, while adding six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Saint Mary's 63 at Memorial 97 (Box Score)

The Memorial Sea-Hawks opened their season at home on Saturday against the Saint Mary's Huskies. The Sea-Hawks held a 48-24 edge at half after outscoring the Huskies 18-10 and 30-14 in the first and second quarters. Memorial continued their lead throughout the game, outscoring Saint Mary's 26-16 in the third quarter to hold a 74-40 lead heading into the final quarter. Tying the Sea-Hawks in points in the fourth quarter with 23, the Huskies would unable to come back, as the Sea-Hawks earned the 97-63 victory. Vasilije Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with 24 points, and posted four assists and five rebounds. Kemar Alleyne led the visitors in points with 12 for the Huskies.

 

UNB 82 at Dalhousie 84 (Box Score)

In their second meeting of the weekend, the Dalhousie Tigers topped the UNB Varsity Reds in a 84-82 comeback win. The Varsity Reds came out hot at the start of the second quarter, going on a 16-0 run to start the frame. The Tigers were down 44-36 at the half. After a back and fourth third quarter, the Tigers were unable to catch up to the Varsity Reds. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers came back with the help of Sven Stammberger scoring 16 points in the frame. Cedric Sango gave the Tigers their first lead since the first quarter with 2:30 to play, while seconds later Stammberger put the Tigers ahead 80-77. The Varsity Reds were unable to make a late shot, allowing the Tigers to earn the impressive 84-82 come back victory. Stammberger had a massive performance for the Tigers, leading the team with 40 points and adding six rebounds, while Jesse Kendell led the Varsity Reds with 22 points.

Acadia 76 at Cape Breton 94 (Box Score)

The Cape Breton Capers hosted the Acadia Axemen on Saturday for their second meeting of the weekend. Leading the Axemen through the first and second quarters, the Capers held a 25-36 edge into the half. The Axemen outscored the Capers in the third quarter for the first time of the game, with 17-16, however it would not be enough as the Capers outscored the Axemen 33-23 in the final quarter, earning the 94-76 victory. Meshack Lufile led the Capers with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and three assists. Shaquille Smith led the visiting Axemen in points with 20, also adding four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 

 

Sunday, November 8

Saint Mary's 86 at Memorial 99 (Box Score)

In their second meeting of the weekend, the Memorial Sea-Hawks topped the Saint Mary's Huskies 99-86. The Huskies trailed the Sea-Hawks 24-22 in the first quarter, but tied the Sea-Hawks in the second quarter with 24 points each, keeping the Sea-Hawks ahead 48-46 at the half. The Sea-Hawks extended their lead in the third quarter, heading into the final frame with a 72-64 edge. The Huskies were unable to catch the Sea-Hawks in the fourth quarter as Memorial outscored Saint Mary's 27-22, earning the 99-86 victory. Theon Reefer and Osman Barrie led the Huskies with 19 points each, while Vasilije Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with a 25 point night, posting 10 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.
