Huskies top Seahawks 92-79

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks 92-79 on Saturday night in AUS men's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

The first half saw Memorial up 21-16 after 10 minutes, but Saint Mary's won the second frame 19-16 for a Memorial 37-35 halftime lead.

A 26-10 third quarter outburst saw SMU lead 61-53 after 30 minutes.

Saint Mary's outscored Memorial 31-26 in the final frame for the 92-79 win.

Memorial's Caleb Gould (Aurora, Ont.) led all scorers with 39 points on 14-of-22 shooting from the floor and Vasilije Curcic (Kragujevac, Serbia) added 23 points. Both players also pulled down nine rebounds apiece.

Halifax, N.S. native Marquis Clayton paced the Huskies with a double-double, adding 26 points and 12 assists to go along with four steals in the win, while Achuil Lual (Ottawa, Ont.), had 21 points and eight rebounds.

Ottawa's Osman Barrie had 15 points coming off the Saint Mary's bench and Jeremy McAvoy (Dartmouth, N.S.) had 11 points for the Huskies.

Rounding out the Huskies scoring were Kadeem Scott (Toronto, Ont.) with nine points, Brent Martindale (Kingston, Ont.) with four points and Ryan Augustine (Toronto, Ont.) and Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, Ont.) with three points apiece.

SMU's Aaron Fisher (Savannah, Georgia) had four rebounds and a steal while Kadeem Thompson (Toronto, Ont.) finished with one rebound for the Huskies.

Memorial falls to 5-10 and holds the sixth and final playoff spot, up four points on 4-12 Acadia and StFX.

SMU grabs four points in the standings with the win and improves to 9-6, good for a third-place tie with CBU (9-8) and Dal (8-8).

The Huskies return to action Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip-off versus Memorial - a game worth four points in the AUS standings.
