Axemen slip into first in AUS standings with win over Memorial

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - Acadia looked to take both games of the weekend against the winless Memorial Sea-Hawks. They came out strong with a 21-5 first quarter and did not look back, handing the Sea-Hawks a 94-63 loss.

Acadia started the game off on a 15-0 run until a free throw ended Memorial's scoring drought. The quarter ended 21-5 in favour of Acadia with Memorial's first field goal coming with 1:38 left in the quarter.

The Sea-Hawks had more offensive success in the second half but were still unable to slow down an Acadia team that shot 48 per cent at the half.

With a 45-26 halftime lead to start the third, the Axemen pushed out to a game-high 33-point advantage in the fourth.

Acadia would finish strong with a 94-63 win.

Owen Klassen led all scorers with 21 point in just 18 minutes. Subway Player of the Game Shaquille Smith added 20 points, four rebounds and four steals for the win. Senior forward Anthony Sears finished with 17 points and first-year forward Gianmarco Luciani added 12.

Alphaeus Kisusi and Vasilije Curcic had 13 apiece for Memorial who could not match their intensity from the previous night's close 75-70 loss.

The four-point win puts Acadia atop the AUS standings with 20 points and stretches their win streak to three.

The Axemen will host UPEI this coming Friday and Saturday nights at the annual CIS Shoot for the Cure weekend. Memorial will head home to host UNB.
