Capers rebound from season-opening loss to down X-Men 84-69 at home

 

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - Just three days after letting a fourth quarter lead slip away on the road, the Cape Breton Capers rebounded to pick up a 84-69 win at home over the StFX X-Men in AUS men's basketball play in Saturday night at the Sullivan Field House in Sydney.

Meshack Lufile led the home side with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks as the Capers improved to 1-1 on the season.

Seth Amoah added 13 points for the winners, while Ashton Stephenson and Cedric Kasongo finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Kasongo also chipped in with seven assists for the winners.

StFX veterans Rod Madera and Will Donkoh led the StFX X-Men (1-1) with 15 points apiece.

With the win, the Capers evened the season series and avenged a 75-72 loss to the same X-Men squad in Antigonish on Wednesday evening.

Saturday, the Capers stormed out to a 25-12 lead after the first quarter and the X-Men were not able to erase the deficit. Cape Breton increased the lead to 46-26 at halftime.

StFX did hold the advantage in the second half as they outscored the Capers 43-38, but it was not enouogh to complete the comeback.

First-year X-Men guard Jameel Williamson also hit double figures for the X-Men with 11 points and he added a team-high five assists.

Madera led the blue and white with seven rebounds, while Alex Arthur chipped in four steals.

Dave Benoit contributed eight points off the bench for the X-Men.

The Capers will be back in action again this weekend when they host the Memorial Sea-hawks in a pair of games at the Sullivan Field House.

The X-Men return to action Wednesday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Halifax to face the Saint Mary's Huskies. Game time is 8 p.m. at The Tower.
