Third-ranked Capers hold off Panthers to remain undefeated

(SYDNEY, N.S.) The CIS No. 3-ranked Cape Breton Capers stayed kept their undefeated season intact with a 77-69 victory over the visiting UPEI Panthers Friday night at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.

Down 32-31 at halftime, the first place Capers shot 44 per cent from the floor in the second half to rebound and to improve to 15-0 on the season.

AJ Geugjes was named the Subway Player of the Game as he led the Capers offence, dropping 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds for the winners.

Freshman Shaquille Keith, who missed the last two games due to illness, came up just two assists shy of a triple double, finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Reigning AUS athlete of the week Jimmy Dorsey also filled the stat sheet for CBU with 12 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Sean McCormick rounded out the Capers who posted double figures, hitting for 14 points and pulling down 11 boards.

Deontay Smith had a game-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds to lead the Panthers while Joey Kendrick chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds in a losing cause.

The two teams will square off again next weekend when CBU travels to Charlottetown for the rematch.
