Dalhousie Tigers capture 19th AUS men's track and field title

(MONCTON, N.B.)  The Dalhousie Tigers claimed both the men's and women's championship banners at the 2022 Subway AUS Track and Field Championships, presented by Bell Aliant, hosted by the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleu(e)s

The Tigers' women's team finished with 153 points to claim their 32nd consecutive championship banner. The UNB REDS followed in second with 76 points while the STFX X-Women finished third with 60 points. The host Moncton Aigles Bleues finished in fourth with 44 points.

The Dalhousie men earned 138.5 points and their 19th championship banner in 20 years. The UNB REDS men's team claimed second place with 95 points and the Moncton Aigles Bleues finished third with 68 points.

Dalhousie's Lorena Heubach was named the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet after capturing gold in the women’s long jump and the pentathlon.

Moncton’s Max Mazerolle was the championship's Subway AUS Athlete of the Meet on the men's side. He captured gold medals in the men's heptathlon as well as the men's 60m hurdles and pole vault. 


AUS Men's Track and Field Major Award Winners

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Promise Akachukwu, Cape Breton University

Promise Akachukwu of the Cape Breton Capers is the AUS track athlete of the year.

A second-year psychology student from Abuja, Nigeria, Akachukwu won a gold medal in the 60m dash at today’s championship event.

This marks the first time a Capers athlete has won this award and the second time Cape Breton has competed in AUS track and field championships.

FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Samuel Bourque, Université de Moncton

Samuel Bourque of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus is the AUS field athlete of the year.

A first-year student from Notre-Dame, New Brunswick, Bourque captured gold in both the men's shot put and men's weight throw events.

This marks the second time a student-athlete from U de M has won this award, following Jean-Luc Bastarache, in 2018-19.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Samuel Bourque, Université de Moncton

Samuel Bourque of the Université de Moncton is the AUS rookie of the year. Today he was also named the 2021-22 AUS field athlete of the year.

A first-year student from Notre-Dame, New Brunswick, Bourque captured gold in both the men's shot put and men's weight throw events.

Bourque is the first athlete from the Aigles Bleus to be named AUS men's track and field rookie of the year.

STUDENT-ATHLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: Alain Lavoie, Université de Moncton

Alain Lavoie from the Université de Moncton men’s track and field team has been named the 2021-22 student-athlete community service award winner.

A second-year education student, Lavoie is a two-time Academic All-Canadian, the 2020 U de M student of the year and was the student of the year for Moncton’s faculty of science and education in 2021.

The captain of the U de M cross-country team, Lavoie is heavily involved in his community both on and off campus. He is currently in his second term as the vice president academic for the U de M student union and is a member of the Academic Senate. He is also an ambassador for the Meal Exchange Program, an organization that promotes food security and sustainability on campuses across Canada, and is the U de M food bank on campus.

Lavoie is the President of the Conseil Jeunesse de la CDR-Acadie, a group that promotes social development in Atlantic Canada and also volunteers his time to mentoring for students in the U de M education program.

He is the fourth student-athlete from U de M to recieve this award, the most recent winner being Alexandre Coholan in 2014-15.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Steve LeBlanc, Université de Moncton

In his 14th year with the program, Université de Moncton head coach Steve LeBlanc has been named the 2021-22 AUS men's track and field coach of the year. Today LeBlanc led the Moncton Aigles Bleues to a fourth-place finish.

This is the first time in his career he has won this award, and the first time a U de M coach has been awarded AUS men's track and field coach of the year.

VOLUNTEER COACH OF THE YEAR: Earl Church, Université de Moncton

Université de Moncton coach Earl Church has been named the 2021-22 AUS volunteer coach of the year for men’s track and field. This marks both Church’s first volunteer coach of the year nod on the men's side, and the first time a coach from U de M has won this award. 

Coach Church has been with the Aigles Bleus for 10 years and has been named the women's track and field volunteer coach of the year twice.
