Saint Mary's tops UNB 3-1

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Saint Mary's Rachel Windhorst continues to shine as the top Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball hitter.

The second-year Surrey, B.C. native had 18 kills and 12 digs for the Huskies in a 3-1 match win over the UNB Varsity Reds Friday night.
Set scores were 25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Up 12-7 in the first set, UNB's lead slipped away as SMU tied it up 16-16. SMU led 23-22 before winning the set 25-22 on a Shelby Charlton (Strathry, Ont.) block.

UNB built an early 12-3 second set lead and easily won 25-16.

In the third set up 8-7, SMU used a 12-7 spurt for a 20-14 cushion, winning their second set 25-17.
Both teams came out swinging in the fourth set, trading points and reaching a score of 11-11. A quick SMU run had the score 16-12 before UNB chipped away to within one point, 16-15. Another 5-1 Huskies run had it 21-16 as Saint Mary's won the set 25-21.
Saint Mary's held a 51-41 kill advantage and had more digs 71-66 in the win.
 
UNB won the service aces 8-5.
 
Saint Mary's sits alone atop first place in AUS play at 10-4 while UNB drops to 8-5 on the year.
The Varsity Reds were lead by Vanja Mitrovic (Fredericton, N.B.) with 14 kills and seven digs while Victoria Eadle (Gallagher Ridge, N.B.) added 13 kills and 11 digs.
Also appearing on the game sheet for the Huskies were Maddie Clark (Ottawa, Ont.) with nine kills, Erin Smith (Moncton, N.B.) and Shelby Carlton (Strathroy, Ont.) with eight kills apiece and Shelby Michaels (Mill Bay, B.C.) with seven kills. Tessa Michaels (Mill Bay, B.C.) added 16 digs and Elly Prince (Calgary, Alta.) finished with one kill.
Saint Mary's is on the road Sunday Feb. 1 at Acadia for a 2 p.m. game. They host Dalhousie on Thursday Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
The Varsity Reds will host the Cape Breton Capers in their final regular season game Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.
