Varsity Reds win first of two exhibition games against Bishop's

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The UNB women's soccer team came out strong in their first pre-season match on home turf, winning by a score of 3-0 over the Bishop's University Gaiters.

Their first goal came fast, when Lauren Cubbon found the net in the sixth minute.

After the quick start, the pace slowed noticeably for the Varsity Reds and the first half saw only two more shots on goal.

That drop-off in pace is something head coach Jon Crossland says he's like to see the team avoid as the regular season gets underway.

"We improved as we went along, for sure," Crossland said. "We slowed the pace down too much in the first half, so they all sat back deep and defended. We need to play the ball quicker and look for the gaps a little bit faster."

In the second half, the V-Reds showed some renewed pressure on the field, and that made itself known on the scoreboard before too long.

The second goal for UNB came in the 65th minute from Nicola Small with an assist from Eden Vanderlaan. And in the dying minutes of the game, at 88:01, Ellen Arsenault scored UNB's third goal with an assist from Sarah Moignard.

This was the first of two back-to-back matches between the two teams. UNB will face off against Bishop's again tomorrow morning at 11 am on BMO Field. Entry is free.
