Panthers down Huskies 6-3 in Game 1 of Subway AUS women's hockey championship quarter-final series

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - In game one of the best-of-three Subway AUS women's hockey quarter-final series, Jessie Howard (Kingston, Ont.) had two goals as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 6-3 Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.

Howard's performance earned her Subway player of the game honours.

The Panthers got the scoring started when Cornelia Geib (Calgary, Alta.) tallied at 4:04 to make it 1-0. The Huskies answered back when captain Breanna Lanceleve (Middle Sackville, N.S.) notched a power play marker at 9:09 to tie it at 1-1 after the first period. 

In the second, Saint Mary's took the lead when Moira MacDonald (Cole Harbour, N.S.) notched a marker at 5:56 to make it 2-1.

The Panthers evened things up when Howard scored on the power play at 15:54.

UPEI reclaimed the lead when Ferran Brown (Calgary, Alta.) scored at 17:45 to make it 3-2.  

At 18:56 of the second, the Panthers extended their lead when Howard got her second of the night. The score was 4-2 after two periods. 

The third saw the Panthers jump further ahead when Emma Weatherbie (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) got a power play tally at 7:36.

The Huskies got one back when Caitlyn Manning (Cambridge, Ont.) scored at 14:26 to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Panthers put the game away when Margaret Grimmer (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) potted a marker at 16:05 for a final score of 6-3.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 29-27. Marie-Soleil Deschen (Ile-Perrot, Que.) made 26 saves to get the win in net for the Panthers and Justine McIntosh (East St. Paul, Man.) and Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, N.S.) combined to stop 21 shots in net for the Huskies.

Game two of this quarter-final series will be played tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Charlottetown. If a third game is necessary, it is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
