Sea-Hawks upset X-Men 80-76 for first win of season

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Memorial Sea-Hawks used a dominant fourth quarter to upset the host StFX X-Men 80-76 Sunday afternoon in AUS men's basketball action in Antigonish.

Memorial outscored the X-Men by a 30-19 margin in the fourth quarter to earn the comeback victory, their first of the season.

The Sea-Hawks trailed 57-50 after three quarters of play but went on a 16-0 run in the opening five minutes of the final frame to take a 76-57 lead.

StFX tried to pressure the visitors in the final minutes of the contest, but the trio of Noel Moffatt, Vasilije Curcic and Ryan Wood each made big shots down the stretch to help secure the Memorial win.

Curcic led the Sea-Hawks with 22 points and eight rebounds while playing the entire 40 minutes.

Moffatt had one of the best games of his varsity career with a season-high 20 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. He also hit three-of-five three-point attempts. Wood came off the bench to finish the game with 12 points in 17 minutes.

The Sea-Hawks shot 50% from the floor in the win and an impressive 57.1% (8-of-14) from three-point range. They were also solid from the free-throw line, hitting 10-of-13 from the charity stripe.

Memorial head coach Peter Benoite was very happy with his team's effort in the win.

"The guys deserved the win today. The worked extremely hard and played very well. It was a big win."

Will Donkoh had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead StFX. Tyrell Vernon added 20 points and Jordan Clarke had 15. All-star forward Jeremy Dunn, the team's leading scorer, did not play for the second consecutive game.

The four-point win was Memorial's first of the season and they improve to 1-13 on the season. StFX dropped to 6-7 with the loss and are in fourth place in the AUS standings.
