Mounties Victorious on Senior Day

(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties football team honoured 18 of their own on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed the Saint Mary's Huskies to Alumni Field for Senior Day. The hometown Mounties would go on to win a close one 13-11.

After a Saint Mary's rouge to start the game, the Mounties were able to capitalize on their first possession as Brandt Burzuk (Red Deer, AB) ran it in from 6 yards out to cap off a 7-play, 75-yard drive to put the home side up 7-1. A Huskies fumble set the Mounties up in prime position within Saint Mary's territory, and while they were unable to find the end-zone, Graeme Maither (Hinchinbrooke, QC) was good from 19 yards to put the home side up 10-1, the score that would remain until the end of the first quarter.

The visitors were the next to put points on the board as Ethan Nagler (Winnipeg, MB) was good from 25 yards out to cap an 8-play, 57-yard drive and bring the Huskies within 6 heading into the half.

Saint Mary's started the second half hot going 76 yards in 4 plays on their first drive, finishing with quarterback Duncan Patterson (Bedford, NS) finding receiver Trydell Mintis (Halifax, NS) for an 8-yard score to put the visitors ahead by one, 11-10.

It was Graeme Maither who was the hero in this one however as his field goal from 17-yards out with 5:07 left in the 4th quarter was enough to put the Mounties on top 13-11, a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game. Jet Agette (Ottawa, ON) had the game-clinching interception for Mount Allison with 21 seconds left as the home side was able to run the clock out. Daniel Bell was given AUS Player of the Game honours for his 10.5 tackle performance for the Mounties defense.

Both teams face potential playoff previews next week as Mount Allison (3-4) will conclude the regular season in Lennoxville, QC, taking on the Bishop's Gaiters at 6:00pm on Friday, October 27th

Saint Mary's (2-5) conclude their regular season at home against StFX. Kick-off in that one is set for 7:00pm in Halifax.
