Acadia squeaks out a come from behind victory over Mounties

(Sackville, N.B.) In the opening week of the AUS season, the Mount Allison Mounties faced off against the Acadia Axemen, resulting in a 15-13 victory for the visiting team in a game that was characterized by strategic plays in key moments. In a rain-soaked contest, fans were treated to a thrilling ending with a kick-back punt situation and a game-winning field goal with no time left on the clock.

The Mounties secured 22 first downs compared to Acadia's 9. Their offensive efforts amassed a total of 314 yards, while Acadia managed 152 yards. The rushing yards also heavily favored the Mounties, as they gained 218 yards on the ground to Acadia's 62 yards.

Acadia's leading receiver was Luke Macmillan, totaling 62 yards on 5 catches with a long of 26 yards.

Quarterback Justin Vogels and running back Brandt Burzuk both eclipsed 100 yards on the ground.

The Mountie defense played tough football in an ugly weather game, headlined by a key sack from defensive end Dennis Rossler, and a diving interception by defensive back Tyler Macdonald. In true "bend, but don't break" fashion, the Mountie defense kept Acadia out of the end-zone and limited them to field goal tries.

The lone Acadia touchdown came on an interception return touchdown by defensive back Jack Malo, who jumped a throw down the middle and sprinted to the end-zone for 45 yards.

Acadia's special teams were a highlight for the visiting team, outgaining the Mounties on kick returns and punt returns. Acadia punter Michael Adams displayed a powerful leg with 11 punts, averaging 40.3 yards per punt. Luke Macmillan had 4 punt returns for 83 yards.

Although weather was an issue for most of the game, both teams only fumbled once, with the Mounties able to recover both loose footballs.

In the game's closing moments, the Acadia Axemen secured a 15-13 victory with a game-winning field goal from kicker Thomas Veinot as time expired.

Next weekend Acadia (1-0) hosts St. Francis Xavier (1-0) on Saturday, September 2nd at 3pm.

The Mounties (0-1) are on a bye week next week and will host St. Francis Xavier (1-0) in two weeks time on Saturday, September 9th with kickoff at 2pm in Sackville.
