Berglund leads Huskies to 29-21 victory over Mounties

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – Quarterback Brock Berglund (San Diego, CA) rushed for two touchdowns and threw another to help the Saint Mary's Huskies defeat the Mount Allison Mounties 29-21 in AUS football action Friday night in front of 1,211 fans at Huskies Stadium.

The Huskies trailed 7-0 early in the opening minutes of the game after Mount Allison's Idahosa Yorke (Bowmanville, Ont.) returned a punt return 88-yards for a touchdown.  

SMU kicker Brian Hope (Port Coquitlan, B.C.) put opened the scoring for the Huskies with a 20-yard field goal with 2:57 left in the first quarter, trimming the Mounties lead 7-3. 

Mount Allison traded a safety for field position and the Huskies trailed 7-5 with 14:47 in the second quarter.

Hope's second field goal of the game, this time from 26 yards, gave Saint Mary's a slim 8-7 lead with 12:06 left in the half.

The Huskies added a touchdown late in the second quarter on a 10-yard toss from Berglund to D'Shawn Miller (Brampton, Ont.) and took a 15-7 lead into halftime.

On the Mounties first possession in the second half, they took over at the 40-yard line a pulled to within one point, 15-14, on a four-yard TD run by  running back Kiel Ambursley (Toronto, Ont.) with 11:36 left in the third quarter.

The Huskies replied on their next drive, with a 92-yard, eight play drive, capped off a one-yard plunge by Berglund with 8:48 left in the quarter to put SMU ahead 22-14.

Berglund's second rushing touchdown came with 5:40 to play in the fourth quarter as he scrambled to his right from Mount Allison's two yard line, and extended the ball over the goal line as he dove over the pylon.

The touchdown gave Saint Mary's a 29-14 lead.

The Mounties rallied late in the final minutes with a Troy Downton (Burlington, Ont.) touchdown on a five yard run with 2:56 to play, bringing Mount Allison within eight points, 29-21.

The Mounties defence forced a punt and gave their squad another possession at midfield with 38 seconds remaining, but DeAndre Smith's (Dunn, NC) interception with 31 seconds left sealed a 29-21 Huskies victory.

Saint Mary's rushed 41 times for 192 yards compared to 141 yards on 35 attempts for Mount Allison.

Berglund was 14-of-32 for 272 yards and one touchdown and added 37 yards rushing while teammates Leonardo Mantuila (Edmonton, Alta.) added 82 yards and Derek Pisani (Newmarket, Ont.) had 52 on the ground.

Downton went 9-for-18 for 35 yards and two interceptions after an injury to starting QB Jakob Loucks knocked him from the game. Mount Allison RB Kiel Ambursley finished with 127 rushing yards on 24 attempts.

Saint Mary's Miller had seven catches for 170 yards and teammate Rick LeMoignan (Edmonton, Alta.) had four receptions. 

Antoine Lyte-Myers (Scarborough, ON) paced the Huskies defence with two interceptions.

Both Mount Allison's Kyle Horsman (Moncton, N.B.) and SMU's Jadarius Ceasar (Tuscaloosa, AL) finished with eight total tackles each.

With the loss, Mount Allison drops to 1-4 will travel to Acadia next week to face the Axemen, who fell to 1-4 with a loss to the StFX X-Men Friday night in Antigonish.

Saint Mary's improves to 2-3 will host the first place StFX X-Men next week for Homecoming.

Both games are 2 pm starts Saturday, October 15th.
