Talia Nixon of the UNB Reds women’s volleyball team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 28, 2024.
Nixon, an Arts student in her first year of eligibility, led her Reds to a sweep of the Dalhousie University Tigers this past weekend by recording a combined 28 kills and 23 digs.
In Friday’s 3-1 victory, the product of Fredericton, N.B., had 14 kills to go along with seven digs and two service aces for a 16-point night.
The next day, Nixon again produced 14 kills while adding 16 digs for a 17.5-point performance in their 3-2 come-from-behind win.
Nixon is third on her team in points (141), kills (118) and kills per set (1.93).

University: Saint Mary’s University
Sport: Men’s Basketball
Position: Guard
Hometown: Montreal, Que.
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: Arts
Marc-Denault Gabriel of the SMU Huskies men’s basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 28, 2024.
Gabriel, a guard from Montreal, Que., helped to keep his team’s second half winning streak alive with a pair of double-doubles against STFX and UPEI.
In Wednesday’s 72-62 victory over the seventh-ranked X-Men, the Arts student in his third year of eligibility scored 18 points and hauled in 18 rebounds.
Later in the week, Gabriel scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in his team’s 81-73 win over the UPEI Panthers.
Gabriel leads all of U SPORTS in rebounds per game (12.1).
