Acadia's Collins, STFX's Hawel named AUS Athletes of the Week

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Ella Collins
University: Acadia University
Sport: Women’s Swimming

Academic program: Kinesiology

Ella Collins of the Acadia Axewomen swimming team is the Atlantic University Sport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 5, 2023.

Taking part in the Amby Legere Invitational hosted by UNB, Collins swam her way to some impressive results, highlighted by her setting a new team record in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 1:11.78 – which was also good enough to qualify for the U SPORTS Championships.

She also took first in the 50m breaststroke (33.56) and 200m breaststroke (2:37.70) before helping her Axewomen to a second-place finish in the 400m relay.

Liam Hawel of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men hockey team is the Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 5, 2023.

The third-year Business student scored four goals while also taking home Player of the Game and First Star honours in both of his team’s victories this past weekend.

He started the weekend with a short-handed and power play goal in STFX’s 4-1 victory over Acadia. A night later, he scored a pair of first-period markers (one of them on the power play) as his team went on to defeat SMU 4-3 and improve to 6-3-1-0 on the season.
