UNB's Woodland and Pinard named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Kendra Woodland of the UNB REDS women's hockey team and Simon Pinard of the UNB REDS men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Kendra Woodland of the UNB REDS women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport women’s athlete of the week for the week ending March 12, 2023.

A recreation and sport studies student in her fourth year of eligibility from Kamloops, B.C., Woodland was named Subway Championship MVP on Wednesday as the REDS became back-to-back AUS conference champions.

On Monday, facing elimination in Game 2 of the best-of-three series, the REDS came away with a 1-0 win at STFX. Woodland stopped all 34 shots she faced, earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

In Wednesday’s Game 3 in Fredericton, before the largest crowed in UNB women’s hockey history, she made 33 saves on 35 shots as the REDS beat the X-Women 3-2 in double overtime.

Woodland and her REDS teammates are the No. 4 seed at the upcoming U SPORTS women’s hockey championship, in Montreal. They’ll face No. 5 Montreal, the tournament hosts, in the quarter-final round.

Simon Pinard of the UNB REDS men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport men’s athlete of the week for the week ending March 12, 2023.

A first-year forward from Drummondville, Que., Pinard was named Subway Championship MVP on Thursday as the REDS captured their fifth consecutive AUS conference title in Fredericton.

In Tuesday’s second game of a best-of three series against Saint Mary’s, Pinard recorded three assists in UNB’s 6-5 double-overtime loss to the Huskies.

In Thursday’s 4-1 title-clinching win, he opened the scoring with the first goal of the game.

Pinard and his REDS teammates are the No. 3 seed at the upcoming U SPORTS University Cup men’s hockey championship, in Charlottetown. They’ll face No. 6 Concordia in the U Cup quarter-final round.
