(HALIFAX, N.S.) – The Special Tigers Sports Program held yet another successful event Saturday at the Dalplex. This was the first Special Tigers day of the season for the program which began last season with the hosting of four very successful events.

Spearheaded by Dalhousie’s women’s track and field captain, fourth-year Rebecca Haworth, Special Tigers days give children with developmental delays an opportunity to learn and play sports with varsity student-athletes from Dalhousie.

Haworth says the most popular sports during these events have been mini-stick hockey, soccer, basketball and volleyball.

About 40 student-athletes came out for Saturday’s event and it was attended by 20 participants.

“It was great to see so many kids returning to the events from last year,” says. Haworth. “And there were also some new faces at the event.” She added that Dalhousie’s assistant athletic director and men’s soccer coach, Pat Nearing, also stopped by before his team’s game and was impressed by both the turnout and the atmosphere at the Dalplex.

More events are planned for the season with dates being announced on the program’s Facebook page at facebook.com/specialtigerssportsprogram. And Haworth says participants are eager to return. “Many of the parents let us know how much their kid(s) enjoy the events,” she said. “They’re thrilled that they will be happening again this year.”
