Axewomen remain undefeated with pair of wins

In Week 2 of AUS women's volleyball action, the Acadia Axewomen played to two-straight victories over the Memorial Sea-Hawks to remain undefeated on the season.

The Axewomen traveled to St. John's this weekend to take on the Sea-Hawks, starting the weekend off strong as they topped Memorial by a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-16). Sydney Zakutney led Acadia from the attack line, posting 10 kills, 7 digs, and 3 blocks, putting forth a stellar performance for the visiting side. Setter Charlotte Dean was great at putting her teammates in favourable positions to attack, accumulating 26 assists on the night. The Sea-Hawks were led by outside hitter Nella Woelfel and her team-high 4 kills, while setters Karen Greek (6 assists) and Erica Rafuse (7 assists) shared the load for the home team.

Acadia then defeat the Sea-Hawks for the second consecutive day, with a 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-12) victory at the Field House Sunday afternoon. The Axewomen were led once again by Syndey Zakutney, who posted a game-high 10 kills and was active on defence too with 16 digs. Middle blocker Erica Fisher was extremely efficient in her attacks, posting 7 kills with an impressive .500 kill percentage. Axewomen setter Charlotte Dean was all over the court for the visitors, registering 27 assists and 6 kills, doing it all for the Axewomen. For the Sea-Hawks, middle blocker Maria Moores was tremendous in the middle, registering a team-high 5 kills and 6 blocks. Lydia Grawer was once again a bright spot for the Sea-Hawks, adding 5 kills, 13 digs, and 4 blocks on the afternoon.

The UNB Reds earned consecutive wins over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues this weekend in their home-and-away stand. In the Reds home opener Friday night, UNB finished the night with a 3-1 victory with scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-21. Lydia Green finished with 10 kills and eight digs for the Reds to earn Subway Player of the Game honours. Emma Burns and Heather Benko led the Reds with 12 kills apiece, while Heather Benko added 15 digs and four service aces. Emily Robichaud led Moncton with a match-high 19 digs, while Joanie Arsenault had seven kills and a dozen digs.

The Dalhousie Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season with a come-from-behind five-set victory (24-26, 19-25, 25-11, 25-23, 15-11) over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday night at the Homburg Centre in Halifax. Tigers setter Brett Boldon was named Subway Player of the Game with a match-high 44 assists to go along with two kills, four service aces, nine digs and four blocks. Lucy Glen-Carter led all players with 26 kills and 27.5 points, while libero Alessandro Nadalini led the match with 25 digs. For the Huskies, the All-Star outside hitter duo of Olivia Bell and Megan Bruhm continued their dominant play as Bell recorded 16 kills, eight digs, two assists and one service ace, while Bruhm added 13 kills, 18 digs, two service aces, two assists and a block.
