Axewomen and Huskies kickoff season with back-to-back wins

In Week 1 of the AUS women's volleyball action, the Acadia Axewomen and Saint Mary's Huskies both earned back-to-back victories.

The Axewomen started the season with a long and nail-biting third-set win to secure a 3-0 victory over the UNB Reds Friday night. Acadia won by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 36-34. Taylor Witty picked up the Subway Player of the Game honours with a team-high 13 kills and an astounding 0.407 hitting percentage in the win. Bailey Lemieux, Heather Benko and Meghan Vaags led the Reds in kills with six each. 

Acadia then edged the Reds 3-1 Saturday as Erica Fisher and Sydney Zakutney led the Axewomen with eight kills each while teammates Rebecca Dorsey and Taylor Witty helped defend the Reds with 23 and 21 digs respectively. The Axewomen won by scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-23. Paige Snell, who was named the AUS Subway Player of the Game, earned her title with a string of service aces in the final set. 

The Huskies started the season off with a 3-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, winning by scores of 22-25, 25-14, 19-25 and 14-25. Olivia Bell took home the Subway Player of the game honors for the Huskies.

Saint Mary's continued their successful season-opening weekend, defeating the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues in three sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) on Saturday night at the Homburg Centre. First-year setter Taylor Lougheed was named Subway Player of the Game with 26 assists, two blocks, and one service ace. Olivia Bell, led all players with 13 kills and 15 digs, while middle Paige Deering posted two solo blocks and two block assists. The Aigles Bleues were led by Ivana Urquhart-Mladineo with seven kills and four digs, while setter Cassidy Martin added 25 assists and Abigail Pallister added three service aces.

The Tigers bounced from their Friday night loss, edging the Aigles Bleues 3-2 Sunday afternoon. Dalhousie was led by Lucy Glen-Carter who recorded 28 kills and 10 digs in the victory, while Kiana Sivert led the Aigles Bleues with 15 kills and added six digs in the loss.
