Panthers sweep weekend games to sit atop women's hockey standings

With back-to-back wins over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues and the StFX X-Women, the UPEI Panthers now sit with a 5-1 record to lead the AUS women's hockey standings.

Thursday evening, the Panthers downed the Aigles Bleues 4-1 in Moncton. UPEI goals came from four different players, with Rachel Colle, Maria Clinton, Delaney Boehm and Kelly Clements all getting on the board. The lone goal from Moncton came from Isadora Quirion.  

The Panthers then came from behind Friday evening to defeat the StFX X-Women 4-3. Jolena Gillard fired the game winning goal at 10:34 of the third period for the Panthers win. Other Panthers goals came from Faith Steeves, Kelly Clements and Taylor Gillis, while Tyra Meropoulis found the back of the net twice for StFX with Jayden Thompson also scoring for the X-Women in the loss. UPEI goaltender Shaylin McFarlene made a massive 39 saves in the win. 

The Dalhousie Tigers earned their first victories of the season with two back-to-back wins this weekend. Their first win of the season came with a 2-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Wednesday evening. Danika Phillips was named the Subway Player of the Game for scoring the game-winning goal for the Tigers, with teammate Lauren Ellerton also finding the back of the net. Fabiana Petricca made 21 saves for the shutout win, while Mountie goaltender Kaitlin Mowbray made a huge 36 saves in the loss. 

The Tigers then topped the St. Thomas Tommies 4-1 Friday evening. Taylor Joyce netted two in the win to earn Player of the Game honours, with teammates Tara Morning (SH), and Lauren Ellerton (EN) also earning tallies in the win. The lone Tommies goal was a short-handed tally from Alex Woods. 

The Saint Mary's Huskies extended their perfect season with a 3-1 win over the visiting UNB Reds Friday evening. Goals for Saint Mary's came from Laura Horwood, Brooke Murphy and Kaitlin Howarth, with Frederike Cyr earning a powerplay tally for the Reds lone goal. 

However, the Huskies perfect season came to an end as they were blanked 3-0 by the St. Thomas Tommies Saturday night. After a scoreless first two periods, the Tommies came out strong in the 3rd with a short-handed tally from Mariah Carey, followed by a goal from teammate Alex Woods with Olivia Reid adding an empty-netter to secure the win. Tommies goaltender finished the night with 34 saves in the shutout victory. 

Despite losing to the Huskies Friday evening, the Reds bounced back Saturday with a 2-1 win over the StFX X-Women. Kendra Woodland was stellar in the Reds nets, turning aside 38 pucks for the win. Ashley Stratton and Katherine Chadwick found the back of the net for the Reds, with Tyra Meropoulis adding a short-handed tally for StFX. 

The Aigles Bleues also split their weekend games as they blanked the Mounties 1-0 Sunday afternoon with Elizabeth Tremblay scoring the lone goal for Moncton.
