Tommies end road trip with OT win over Huskies

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The St. Thomas Tommies (10-7-4) were all smiles on the heels of an overtime victory against the Saint Mary's Huskies (13-4-2).

Eliza Snider's power-play goal 2:59 into overtime gave the Tommies a 3-2 win over the Huskies on Saturday afternoon to finish their weekend road trip.

The Tommies have enjoyed their time in Halifax as they defeated Dalhousie on Friday and have now extended their win streak to three games. The streak includes wins against the top two teams in the AUS, Saint Mary's and StFX.

Kristin Wolfe played brilliantly in net, doing everything possible to keep the Tommies in the game and give her team a chance to grab two points. The Huskies shelled Wolfe with 49 shots but she stood tall and only gave up two goals.

St. Thomas quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead 0:44 into the game on a goal by Katie Brewster. The Tommies captain was alone in the slot when she received a pass from Kelty Apperson and zipped a wrist shot over the glove of Sienna Cooke for her tenth of the season.

Saint Mary's dominated the second period but were unable to turn the game in their favour.

Early in the period a scramble in front of Wolfe transpired as the Huskies frantically tried to tie the game. The puck squirted out to the point where Sarah Douglas whipped a wrist shot that a prostrate Wolfe stunningly saved with her blocker.

Undeterred, at 8:49 Douglas evened the game on the power-play. This time she used a screen in front and her point shot beat Wolfe cleanly.

Mere seconds elapsed before the Tommies would regain their lead. At 9:03, Myfanwy Thomson tallied her fifth goal of the season and Kenya Marcelline picked up the assist.

In the third period, both teams had great scoring chances from breakaways. Wolfe turned away Nicole Blanche who had deked to her backhand.

At the other end, Sienna Cooke robbed Thomson of a goal and later in the period it was Brewster who missed high over Cooke's net.

With eight minutes remaining in the third, the Huskies managed to tie the game when Maggie Poliseno took a pass from Haylee Tretiak and, as she was falling to the ice, roofed the puck into the top right corner.

During overtime, Brewster and Caitlyn Manning took penalties 40 seconds apart, treating fans to 3-on-3 hockey.

It was Brewster who returned to the ice first where she quickly contributed, sending Eliza Snider on a 2-on-1. Snider came down the left wing and handcuffed Cooke with a shot that squeaked under her blocker.

Saint Mary's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they will travel to Sackville to face Mount Allison. The Tommies look to continue their winning ways on Friday at UPEI.
