Aigles Bleues squeak by Tigers 2-1 in shoot out

(MONCTON, N.B.) - The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (10-8-1) won their sixth straight game by a narrow 2-1 margin in a shootout against the Dalhousie University Tigers (5-12-3) in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game, Sunday at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

A goal by Kaitlyn Gallaway gave her team the victory.

Roxanne Turcotte, assisted by Amélie Dion, gave the Aigles Bleues a 1-0 lead in the first period. Fielding Montgomery (from Sarah Robichaud) evened the chances in the second as Moncton had problems getting organized. There was no third period or 10-minute overtime scoring.

The Aigles Bleues were dominant 36-17 in shots on goal, including 13-9 in the first and 5-1 in the overtime.

"This is our sixth in a row, but we did not play that well, especially in the second period," coach Denis Ross said after the game. "Our offensive worked well in the first, but had a break down in the second. Their goaltender made a difference with 36 shots. We missed a few shots and we take the two points. We can learn from this game."

"I worked hard the three periods and I took advantage of chances," said Subway Player of the Game Roxanne Turcotte. "We kept battling out there and their goaltender made a big difference. We were stressed out in the overtime and the shootout, but it's nice to play four-on-four because you have more space on the ice. We had confidence in our goaltender and  she came through."

The Aigles Bleues travel to Antigonish, Saturday, for a match up with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women (13-3-2), at 7 p.m. They have five games left to play in regular schedule.

The Tigers will host the St. Thomas Tommies Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
