Poliseno, Lanceleve score two each in 6-3 victory over Mounties

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Saint Mary's Huskies (8-2-0) defeated the Mount Allison Mounties (3-8-0) Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-3 at Alumni Arena in Halifax

Saint Mary's goaltender Rebecca Weagle made her first start of the season count, making 27 saves in the victory.

Maggie Poliseno chipped in with three points including a short-handed marker early in the third period.

The Huskies opened the scoring two minutes into the game when Poliseno and Selby Jessiman earned a 2-on-0 break against Mounties goaltender Kate O'Brien. Poliseno fed it to Jessiman who returned the pass for Poliseno to pot it into the open cage.

Two minutes later, the Huskies scored again when Caitlyn Manning took a Taylor Williamson pass over the blue line with speed and picked the top corner of the net over the blocker of O'Brien.

The Mounties got on the board a minute into the second period on the power-play.

Mount Allison forward Lindsay James pounced on a rebound and lifted the puck over Weagle's glove to cut the lead to 2-1.

Saint Mary's answered just 20 seconds later, on the very next shift, when Breanna Lanceleve scored to restore her squad's two-goal lead.

Towards the end of the frame, Poliseno again manufactured an odd-man rush. This time, Kaylan Palsat drove hard to the net and blasted a Poliseno feed past O'Brien.

The Mounties were able to counter when the Huskies ran into penalty trouble. Rebecca Weagle made several saves during a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power-play time, but Mount Allison forward Kara Anthony scored when she deflected a point shot past the Huskies netminder while Chelsea Osbaldeston was serving the second half of a double minor.

In the third, Poliseno scored short-handed when she beat O'Brien for her second goal of the game. The goal signalled the end of O'Brien's day as she was replaced in favour of Keri Martin.

Before the end of the penalty, the Mounties scored for the third time on the power-play when Anthony notched her second of the game.

The Huskies, backstopped by Weagle, prevented the Mounties from scoring in the final 16 minutes of the third period.

Before the end of the game, Lanceleve picked up her AUS-leading 10th goal of the season when she scored on a breakaway set up by a long stretch pass from defenceman Rebecca Mosher.

Saint Mary's will play back-to-back home games next weekend, their last games before the exam break. They will host the UPEI Panthers Friday, Nov. 29 and the StFX X-Women Saturday, Nov. 30. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alumni Arena and will be available via webcast at www.AUStv.ca.

The Mounties will host the Dalhousie Tigers this Thursday, Nov. 26 in their second last regular season game of the semester. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
