X-Women open season with a pair of wins

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The CIS No. 3-ranked X-Women hockey team began the 2013-14 season on a winning note, picking up two victories on home ice in their first taste of AUS regular season action.

Friday night the X-Women handled the Dalhousie Tigers by a 7-0 margin, then followed up with a 5-2 win over the St. Thomas Tommies on Sunday afternoon.

In their shutout victory over the Tigers, Kara Power led the blue and white scoring attack with a hat trick. The X-Women scored five of their seven goals while on the power play.

Freshman goaltender Pascale Daigle picked up the win in nets with nine saves as the X-Women outshot the Tigers 36-9.

Schyler Campbell opened up the scoring four minutes into the game for the X-Women, scoring on the power play from Jenna Pitts and Alex Normore.

Normore tallied the second X goal less than two minutes later with Campbell assisting.

Before the first period was over StFX tacked on another two goals for a 4-0 lead. Kara Power notched her first of the game on the power play at 8:00, from Connor Garagan, and Taylor Dale also scored on the power play at 16:49. Jenna Pitts assisted on the Dale goal.

The second period brought one goal from the blue and white, off the stick of Power at 6:32 from Dale, with the extra attacker.

Third period scoring was rounded out from freshman Jaelei Meyers, scoring an unassisted marker at 5:30 and Power with her third, on the power play from Jenna Downey at 7:08. All three of Power's goals were scored with the extra attacker.

Friday's game marked a 'Pink in the Rink' fundraiser where the X-Women raised $1,000 for breast cancer research.

On Sunday afternoon, the X-Women held leads of 2-1 and 3-2 after the opening two periods before posting a 5-3 victory over the visiting St. Thomas Tommies.

Daly Oddy scored 8:11 into the game from Normore and Nicole Corcoran and Paige Belair notched an unassisted marker at 10:50 to give the X-Women an early 2-0 lead.

Myfanwy Thomson closed the gap for the Tommies with 40 seconds left in the period while on the power play.

The two teams exchanged second period goals. Jordan Miller (11:21) tallied for the Tommies while Meyer scored the eventual game winner for StFX at 13:48. Oddy and Normore picked up the assists.

The X-Women scored an insurance marker off the stick of Campbell at 15:11 of the third period. Normore and Jenna Downey assisted.

Normore, the two-time AUS most valuable player, closed out a six-point weekend with an unassisted empty net goal.

Shots were in the X-Women's favor at 38-16 as Sojung Shin picked up the victory in net for StFX. Tommies' Kristin Wolfe was tagged with the loss.

The X-Women will hit the road for games at Saint Mary's (2-0-0) on Oct. 26 and Moncton (0-1-1) the following day.
