Panthers storm back to defeat Capers 54-51

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - In control through three quarters of play, the Cape Breton Capers women's basketball team suffered a defensive lapse in the fourth quarter enroute to a 54-51 loss to the visiting UPEI Panthers Friday night at the Sullivan Field House in Sydney, N.S.

The Capers led 15-14 after the first quarter, were ahead by a 25-21 margin at the half and increased their lead to 40-32 heading into the final quarter, where they were outscored 22-11.

Laura Power had a game-high 20 points off the bench for UPEI who picked up four points in the AUS standings and improve to 3-10 on the season.

Amy Gough added 13 points and eight boards for the Panthers and Nakita Newman chipped in with six points.

Colleen Keane had 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals in a losing cause for CBU, who are now 4-11 and in sixth place.

Tanira McClurkin with nine points and five assists and Brittany Hollins with nine points were other top players for the home side.

The Capers women wore pink uniforms and a pink ball was used during the game as part of the 'CIS Shoot for the Cure' program, which raises money for breast cancer research.

The two teams will meet again next Friday in Charlottetown.
