Axewomen post 90-64 win over Varsity Reds

(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) - The Acadia Axewomen basketball team extended their winning streak to three games following a convincing 90-64 win over the UNB Varsity Reds Saturday afternoon in Wolfville.

Acadia trailed the V-Reds until the 2:31 mark of the first quarter when Rachel Savage sank a three-pointer to give the home team a one-point lead.

Less than 30 seconds later, senior forward Abbey Duinker nailed another three-point shot to give Acadia a lead that changed hands only one more time early in the second half.

Acadia closed the first half of the game with a slim 37-32 lead and pushed the lead to 24 points with just over a minute remaining in the game.

Veteran guard Lindsay Harris lead Acadia with 19 points while Abbey Duinker added 18 points and seven rebounds.

Kristy Moore returned to the home court for the first time since an injury she sustained prior to the holiday break versus StFX. Moore finished with 15 points while teammates Rachel Savage and Carlie MacDonald bucketed 10 and 11 points respectively.

UNB's Claire Colborne captured Subway player of the game honours for the V-Reds with 19 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Colleen Daly added 12 points in a losing cause.

With the win, Axewomen improve to 9-2 and sit in third place with 24 points - tied with Dalhousie. UNB drop to 2-10 and are in seventh place with six points.

Acadia faces UNB for the second of two games Sunday afternoon for the second day of a two-day "Shoot for the Cure" fundraising effort for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The game will be available via webcast at: http://live.streamit.ca/?player=57
