Weeks, Crowell named AUS Swimmers of the Year
(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The Dalhousie Tigers women's and men's teams won the AUS Swimming Championships Sunday evening at Dalplex.
The women's team won a 22nd straight AUS title, with the men's team winning their 24th title in the last 25 years.
In the first event of the evening, the women's 800m freestyle, Dalhousie's Reagan Crowell (Lakeville, N.B.), won gold with a time of 8:46.51, with a U SPORTS qualifying time.
Teammate Ella Dobson (Middle Sackville, N.S.) followed Crowell in second, with a time of 9:10.69 to capture a silver medal. Natalie Smart (Memorial) placed in third with a time of 9:11.37.
The Tigers captured second and third-place finishes in the men's 200m butterfly. Daniel Pearce (Memorial) placed first with a time of 2:06.10. Will Myrer (Dartmouth, N.S.) won silver with a time of 2:06.51, and Frederick Chandler-Baas (Ottawa, Ont.) won bronze with a time of 2:06.67.
In the women's 200m butterfly, Emma Sinclair (UNB) won gold with a time of 2:24.54. Sophie Idle (Calgary, Alta.) won silver, finishing with a time of 2:27.53. Heidi Perry (Memorial) won bronze.
In the men's 50m breaststroke, Gordon Shortt (Acadia) won gold with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 28.41. Blake Kingston (UNB) won silver with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 28.48. Connor Maloney (London, ON) won bronze. He finished with a time of 29.20.
In the women's 50m breaststroke, Ella Collins (Acadia) won gold with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 31.80. Jordan Thomas (Mount Allison) placed second with a time of 33.09. Kate Tuck (Sunderland, ON) won bronze with a time of 33.25.
In the men's 100m freestyle, Chris Weeks (Memorial) won gold with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 49.02. Noah Mascoll-Gomes (St. John's, Antigua) won silver with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 49.77. In third was Bo Price-Stokesbury (Acadia), scoring a time of 50.97.
Crowell won another gold medal in the women's 100m freestyle, scoring a time of 57.01, a U SPORTS qualifying time. Elodie Martin (UNB) finished second with a time of 57.61. Sara Bennett (Acadia) secured a bronze medal, completing the race with a time of 58.12.
Dal had two medalists in the men's 200m backstroke. Liam Ferguson (Upper Tantallon, NS) placed second with a time of 2:04.99. Alex D'Alessio (Ottawa, ON) won bronze with a time of 2:07.11. Sebastion Cariaga (Mount Allison) won the race with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 2:01.61.
In the women's 200m backstroke, Sophie Rooney (Acadia) won gold with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 2:13.98. Emillie Schofield (Miramichi, NB) secured a silver medal for the Tigers. She finished with a time of 2:19.14. In third place was Grace Earle (Acadia), who had a time of 2:19.38.
Acadia won the women's 400m medley relay with a time of 4:15.83. The Tigers placed second, and Memorial placed third.
In the men's 400m medley relay, Dal finished first with a time of 3:46.68, securing the gold medal. Acadia followed in second place, and UNB placed third.
AUS AWARDS:
UNB's Emma Sinclair won AUS Female Rookie of the Year.
Memorial's Chris Weeks won AUS Male Rookie of the Year.
The AUS Female Swimmer of the Year was awarded to Dalhousie's Reagan Crowell.
The AUS Male Swimmer of the Year went to Memorial's Chris Weeks.
Sarah Dessureault of the Mount Allison Mounties was the recipient of the Female Student-Athlete Community Service Award, while Dalhousie's Noah Mascoll-Gomes was named the Male Student-Athlete Community Service Award recipient.
The AUS Women's and Men's Coach of the Year is Lance Cansdale from Dalhousie.
