Huskies win third straight heading into winter break

In the ninth week of the AUS men's hockey season, the Saint Mary's Huskies skated to victories over the Dalhousie Tigers and StFX X-Men, allowing them to climb to third in the standings.

Wednesday night, the Huskies scored four unanswered goals to defeat their crosstown rivals the Dalhousie Tigers 5-2 at the Halifax Forum. Huskies defenceman Justin MacPherson was named Subway Player of the Game with one goal and two assists. Nathan Dunkley found the back of the net twice in the win, while Cedric Ralph (PP) and Charlie Dafonseca also recorded tallies in the win. Shaun Miller and Matt green got on the board for the Tigers in the loss.

The Huskies then wrapped up the 2022 portion of their schedule having won three straight games after defeating the StFX X-Men 4-3 on Friday night in Halifax. Huskies forward Keith Getson was named Subway Player of the Game with two goals, while Nathan Dunkley and Caelan McPhee both had two assist nights for the Huskies. Cedric Ralph and Jaxon Bellamy also recorded tallies in the win, while Josh Nelson finished the night with a hattrick for the X-Men. 

The UNB Reds recorded a weekend sweep, first skating to a 4-1 win over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in their annual Teddy Bear Toss Game Friday night. It took Thomas Casey just 33 seconds to make it rain stuffed animals at UNB's Aitken Centre on Friday night. Ross MacDougall, Adam McCormick (PP) and Cody Morgan also recorded tallies for the Reds in the win, while Moncton's lone goal came from Vincent Deslauriers. 

Saturday, the top two teams in the AUS went head-to-head as the UPEI Panthers hosted the Reds. The Reds came out victorious, edging the home team 3-2. Simon Pinard paced the Reds with a goal and an assist, while Cody Morgan and Jason Willms also found the back of the net. Kurtis Henry and Kyle Maksimovich (PP) scored for UPEI in the loss.

With their wins, the UNB Reds have already secured their spot in the playoffs in February as they currently sit with a 15-2-1 record for 31 points. 

Despite their loss to the Reds Saturday, the Panthers split their games this week, earning a 4-1 win over the Aigles Bleus Wednesday. TJ Shea led the way with a goal and two assists, while teammates Kyle Maksimovich recorded a goal and an assist each. Daylon Groulx also netted his first AUS goal in the win. Nathael Roy responded with the lone goal for Moncton.

The Acadia Axemen started their week with a 5-4 overtime victory over the StFX X-Men as defender Merrick Rippon sealed the victory for the Axemen Wednesday night. Hudson Wilson, Cole Nagy, Liam Kidney and Brendan Sellan all found the back of the net for Acadia, while Jacob Hudson and Josh Nelson both recorded two tallies apiece for StFX in the loss.

Saturday night, the Axemen traveled to Halifax to take on the Dalhousie Tigers, where the Tigers edged the visitors 3-2. Matt Green, Kyle Yewchuk and Ethan O'Rourke all got on the board for Dalhousie, while Jack Flaman (PP) and Peyton Hoyt recorded tallies for Acadia in the loss. Kyle Yewchuk earned Subway player of the game honours for Dalhousie.
